"Frequently derided as a patchwork of bombastic clichÈs, Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture is in fact a tautly crafted, brilliantly orchestrated, and immensely exciting piece for large orchestra, cathedral bells, and muzzle-loaded cannon. Even though the work is superficial, it contains the same emotional vectors found in all of Tchaikovsky's music, and leaps to life in a properly realized and sensitive performance. Although not among his best works, the 1812 Overture is representative of Tchaikovsky's skills in structure and scoring, and certainly belongs in the collection of every listener at all interested in Tchaikovsky, nationalism in music, program music depicting war, or brilliant orchestration. Many otherwise serious and sophisticated listeners consider it THE premier fun piece of concert music." - AMG.
This Mercury Stereo Living Presence recording is what started it all in the competition to press the most impressive version of this famous piece of music. It held that honor until (questionably) the release of the Telarc LP with it's massive cannons which could onlly be tracked by a select few arm/cartridge combinations. Many maintain that the Mercury still was better over-all with the Telarc winning in the "Cannons" category.
This is a true very Early Pressing of this Stereo LP with FR1/FR4 Stampers.

The LP plays/sounds Mint.
Astounding, open, clear and detailed sound. This LP is very dynamic with realistic sounding cannons and an incredible sounding recording of the Giant Carillon Bells. The strings are warm and each instrument of the orchestra has it's own fine detail and space. Imaging is rock solid and the soundstage is wide and deep. Lots of micro-detail. The "Finale" of this recording is considered by many to be the best ever recorded!
Surface noise ('ticks') is present on the beginning of Side 1 for about 1-2 minutes, then low-level ('crackles') only on very quiet passages but do not interfere with the Music.
Each record is washed on a VPI cleaning machine using a proprietary 3-5 agent process which is determined by the needs of the individual record. Each record is then listened to 100% to insure that the posted description is exactly what you can expect to get.
