The case has not been cracked. If you look at the second photo, you will see a tape on the right-hand side, which reads "WARRANTY VOID IF BROKEN." It also has a date on it: probably January 2009. My guess is that this is the manufacturing date. Based upon this, it is reasonable to suggest that this unit has never been opened or modified.
