CALLISTO SIGNATURE Tubed LINESTAGE Preamplifier with Tubed Power Supply and Dual Motor Remote

This exceptionally well cared for set is complete with all original power cords, manuals and boxes.

Most audio gear these days is not built to last. The Aesthetix Callisto is a rare piece of equipment that has been in continuous production for 20 years and still retains it's spot at the top of the market. After 20 years it is still among the finest sounding preamps you can buy at any price. This is what the finest US made audio gear is all about. What a staggering achievement. Most audio designers dream of winning a coveted Golden Ear award even if their gear will be forgotten within a few short years. To not only win that award and Stereophile Recommended Class A status but to be still in production and in demand after 20 years is basically unheard of. Every detail about the sound, the function, and the looks of this piece of gear was carefully thought out from the beginning and implemented in such a way that with one exception, this design has held up for 20 years unchanged. That one exception is that the older Callisto's were made with Mills resistors, the newest units like this one have the Roederstein resistors.

Before I sold this I wanted to make sure that everything on it was up to date so that I would not have a situation where someone buys it from us and then ends up feeling he made a mistake. So I called Aesthetix and spoke with Jim White, the same designer who was behind the success of Theta Digital. Jim was super friendly and helpful and looked this unit up for me and confirmed that it has the newer Roederstein resistors. Otherwise we would have sent it in to have it upgraded before selling it. Wme never want a buyer to receive an item that needs work. Jim confirmed that this one is good to go, that it's up the latest specs and that it should not need new tubes for years more.

Probably the vast majority of the Callistos that you are going to see used are going to be older ones with the old resistors. While it is fantastic that a product like this is so well designed and so well built that it lasts on the top of the market for decades it does create some challenges in terms of valuing it. The Blue Book is really designed more for the average product that is just made for 1-3 years. For products like this you really wish they would put in a year in the Blue Book to help you more properly distinguish between an older unit like most of the ones that come up for sale and a newer one like this. But of course not many of these sell to begin with so it's a challenge to assign book values no matter what. I think a better way to approach a piece of gear of this quality is to think in terms of the fact that it's still available today from your local Aesthetix dealer if you have one in your area. You could go to him and get one the same as this but with less wear on the tubes for $13,000 plus tax. And as many people have said, this preamp represents a great value at that price. Or, you could buy this one for $7,000 and then if you use it regularly for a couple of years maybe think about buying a new set of tubes. They are readily available from Aesthetix for $450 retail for all 16 tubes for both the preamp chassis and the power supply chassis. Jim White said these tubes are not ready to be replaced yet but in a couple of years, if you used it a lot, he would think about doing it. If you use it less frequently then they will last longer. If you are a knowledgable tube roller then you could also try NOS tubes. We've included something below that Albert Porter posted about some tubes he had tried and recommended on his Callisto Signature.

Also, whoever buys this unit can get it upgraded to the Eclipse status which is the status above Signature if he or she wants. The buyer can go through me for that or do it with Aesthetix directly, whichever you prefer. Of course there is no obligation to upgrade this any further, it already is a Signature unit and probably that is enough to satisfy most people. But if you did want to upgrade it further, either with Eclipse or adding a second power supply, then I want you to know that it's available. You should not feel that you have to pay $6,000 more to get it from a dealer new so that you could get the Eclipse upgrades added. You can buy it from us, get the big savings, then do the Eclipse upgrades if you wish. Jim White said they are absolutely well worth it and in his opinion they take the preamp to a whole new level. So, while I am not an Aesthetix dealer myself I do feel confident that I can support the buyer of this unit and that Aesthetix is a great company that will also be happy to support the buyer--they are not going to be all finicky about you buying it from a dealer who is not authorized!

All of my listening to the Aesthetix Callisto Signature was done in Terry's system. This is an ultimate reference system that dwarfs any system I have ever had. The system includes the famed $100,000 Walker Black Diamond turntable, Audio Research Reference 10 phono stage, Lamm M 1.2 Reference hybrid power amps and the Scaena Master Reference speaker system.

The Master Reference is a unique Scaena system originally created for Mr. Harry Pearson, founder of The Absolute Sound. It's a modified top of the line Scaena 1.6 system with the addition of the Raven Alize tweeters. This sweet system is housed in a dedicated listening building at his home and he cares for all of his gear meticulously. No smoking, no kids, no pets.

This exceptionally well cared for Aesthetix set is complete with all original power cords, manuals and boxes. Terry maintains his gear better than any other audiophile I work with and much better than the actual high end dealers I have liquidated gear for in the past. He is extraordinarily careful and patient. I think many sellers would rate this as a 10/10 because it is absolutely flawless. But we do not rate anything as 10/10 and Terry is very conservative. He told me to rate it an 8/10 and so I am doing that but there are no visible flaws, it is complete with everything and in like new condition.

I have disabled the "Buy it Now" button on Audigon because we had a whole run of people last year who agreed to buy then never responded to emails and never paid. I prefer to do business the old fashioned way where we exchange emails like gentlemen and conduct a smooth and safe transaction for all parties. I don't own this and I cannot take much less than the asking price for it. If you make me a low offer there is no way I am going to go to this very successful gentleman and tell him that I have a low offer, that so and so really wants it but his wife won't let him spend more than X amount for it. I'll just ignore the lowball offer and wait til a better one comes in. However, if you want to buy this together with some other items, as part of a package deal, then that would be something we can discuss. Just let me know what items you want.

You can use the Audiogon system to make offers, but if you have questions it is much better if you email us direct to [email protected] as the Audiogon system is very clunky and slow for messaging.

Also, because we're selling this for a client and have to give him cash for it, we're not going to take trades unless you make us some trade offer that we consider to be so far in our favor that we can't resist putting in our own money to buy your gear. However, if you have other gear you want to sell in order to purchase this then we CAN help you sell your gear and we are happy to. We have a good market for some lines of used gear, such as Synergistic. In fact, we have some gear on the way to us right now from a new customer who just bought a new PowerCell 10 UEF and FEQ Equalizer from us. We'd love to help you update your system too, as part of the process, we can help you sell off any and all of your older gear from other top notch companies. Also, please note that because this item is a consignment item, be informed that this sale will be sealed and complete 30 days after you receive the item in the guaranteed condition. For more information about our policies please visit the fine print section below. We do our best to treat all of clients in a honorable way and that includes letting you know our policies up front, thank you for reading the information.

At first I have to say that I found the click that the Aesthetix makes when you change the source or volume to be disconcerting. I didn't understand what was going on. But after I realized how the Aesthetix was built I came to understand that Jim White had gone to every length to avoid using potentiometers which are used in nearly every volume control in existence but designers all pretty much agree that they sound awful. They use them out of convenience but they compromise the audio performance to get that. The Aesthetix is truly a no-compromise piece of gear in the sense that Mr. White simply was not willing to give up great sound for any kind of convenience. In fact, for many years the Callisto had no remote control. And as you can imagine, it is REALLY hard to sell a preamp with no remote control because people want to be able to adjust the volume from their listening position. Most people are OK with getting up to change a source, but they want to be able to adjust volume from their seats and it's harder to enjoy your music without that convenience. So nearly all other designers had given in and incorporated remotes, but Jim White did not. But then, he figured out an elegant way to add a remote control. Some Callistos you see for sale were built before the remote was offered and have been modified to accept it but this one was built from the start to have the remote. The remote uses two large high-torque stepper motors connected to the volume shafts by a system of belts and pulleys to physically move the volume knobs just as though you were turning them yourself. Furthermore, there are optical sensors tied into the system that allow the remote control to determine and keep track of any movements the user makes. So if the volume is at 10 for example and the remote is used to step it up to 20 the display on the volume control will display volume 20. if the user then stands up and turns the knobs up another 5 steps manually the display on the remote will go to 25 even though the remote was not used. It's a totally sweet system. Albert Porter wrote a detailed review of just the Callisto Volume Control system alone for Positive Feedback. You can read that here if you wish. I love Mr. Porter's work.

A lot of the best reviews of the Callisto were done before the high end audio magazines were routinely put online. If you have a solid collection of the hard copy magazines you should be able to look them up or of course you could get them at any good library. We've put some brief excerpts below. The Callisto has won both the Audiophile Golden Ear which is probably considered the highest possible award that gear can earn and a Stereophile Class A recommended component for many years. There are many other good reviews and awards. And I think that means a lot more for a tiny company like Aesthetix that barely advertises than it does for the huge companies that buy lots of ad pages and routinely receive great reviews from the mags they advertise in. But all that being said, I personally feel there is no substitute for trying a piece of gear like this in my own room with my own acoustics, other gear and cables and so on. I have had the experience numerous times that I tested something at a trade show and then brought it home to test and got completely opposite results. Sometimes it sounded much better in my systems, sometimes much worse. But either way I learned that there is no substitute for trying things. And that's why I love to buy gear like this on Audiogon because you can buy it and try it with very low risk. If you try it and you love it then you saved $6,000 + tax over buying it new from a dealer. If you buy it and decide to try something else and put this back up for sale then you should be able to get out of it most of what you paid for it. So it's nothing like the risk of trying a brand new piece where just cutting the tape to open the box is costing you $3,000 or $4,000 in depreciation from a new piece to one that has been opened.
This is a rare, low-risk opportunity to try out a true reference linestage. Of course we hope you'll love it and that it will sound fantastic in your system. And it probably will.
And as the previous owner said as he was preparing to sell this, "Not many of these come up for sale and for good reason. One of the very best preamps on the market."

Thank you for taking the time to check out this listing, please enjoy the following pictures, specifications and reviews as you decide whether or not this is the next great set of equipment to help you enjoy your music even more. If you have any questions, please feel free to email us at [email protected] and have a great winter. And as I mentioned, we would be happy to sell your gear on consignment if that would help you to purchase this or other items from the High End Zone. Our most successful customers are very busy folks and I understand that if they spend hours answering questions from Audiogners, that is thousands of dollars that they lost in terms of what they could have earned with that time. I do have some restrictions as to what I can sell because of the manufacturer rules about online sales and so on, but I do my best to help. I can arrange to have the gear picked up from your home or office, or in some cases I can even have someone come in and pack it for you, then we will handle all the testing, photography, sales of the item and follow up after the sale. Since many people prefer to buy from a dealer and because we have 10 years of perfect feedback on Audiogon and Ebay with no neutrals or negatives ever we can usually get more for your items than you could get yourself. Depending on the exact item, you may net as much or even slightly more having us sell it. And once you factor in the value of your time, it's a clear savings to let us sell the gear for you. So let us know if we can be of service to you in that area.

The following information comes directly from the Aesthetix website. The Aesthetix pictures are all of the actual set for sale.

CALLISTO TUBE LINESTAGE Overview

"Simply phenomenal inner detail, vast soundstaging, and a dynamic and harmonic bloom that seems to bring every kind of music to vivid life" The Absolute Sound Golden Ear Award (2003, CALLISTO SIGNATURE linestage)

Callisto is an all-tube linestage suitable for the most demanding audio systems and listeners. Fully balanced circuitry from input to output, including internal balancing of single-ended inputs, results in common mode signal rejection and cleaner sound. The innovative discrete switched resistor volume control maximizes resolution at any listening level. A separate power supply chassis removes any possibility of transformer noise corrupting the delicate audio circuitry. Peter Moncrief Stealth Capacitors are used in the Eclipse Edition for unparalleled sound quality.

  • Fully balanced differential circuitry with ability to internally balance a single-ended input signal.

  • Innovative and unique mechanically switched discrete resistor volume control with 46 positions using Roederstein resistors.

  • Separate volume controls and input selectors for each channel.

  • All tube amplification and output (8 tubes total).

  • Separate vacuum tube regulated power supply utilizing 8 tubes.

  • Two sets of XLR and two sets of RCA outputs per channel.

  • Six inputs: First two single-ended (rca) or balanced (XLR); remaining four single-ended (rca) only.

"The Callisto is as fast, neutral, dynamic and authoritative as any preamp I've ever heard, solid-state or not... entirely worthy of the high esteem in which it's been held..." -Shane Buettner, Audio Perfectionist Journal (2007, CALLISTO linestage)

CALLISTO OPTIONS AND UPGRADES

Mk II, Signature and Eclipse

Callisto is available in three versions: Mk II, Signature and Eclipse. The Mk II version uses high-grade Rel-Cap polypropylene coupling capacitors. The Signature version uses exotic and expensive coupling capacitors and other critical parts to bring the performance to a higher level. Eclipse is the ultimate realization of the true capabilities of the Callisto, incorporating constrained-layer damped machined aluminum panels and Peter Moncrief's Stealth Capacitors. All versions of Callisto can be factory upgraded to Signature or Eclipse.
This unit is the Signature version.

Remote Control

Remote control is optional with the Callisto. Adding the system allows remote adjustment for volume and muting, and optionally phase. The remote system uses motors and pulleys to rotate the volume controls and has a completely isolated electrical system. It may be added to any version of Callisto.
This unit does come with the Remote Control.

Faceplate Finish

This Callisto Signature has a silver faceplate.

JUPITER SIGNATURE EDITION

Signature, released in 2001, was the first major step forward for the Callisto. Incorporating improved componentry such as Dynamicaps from Peter Moncrief and hand tuning the individual gain stages, greater resolution and inner detail were achieved without sacrificing the richness and dynamic bloom of the original design.

The Signature version uses custom-made inter-stage Teflon coupling capacitors, replacing the polypropylene units, between the 1st and 2nd gain stages. This change results in very high resolution of the very low signal level. Between the 2nd and 3rd, and 3rd and 4th gain stages (4 total per channel), the standard Rel-Caps are replaced with .22uF Dynamicap. The change in these capacitors results in higher resolution, extension, less grain and more air. The 2uF output coupling capacitors (4 per channel) are also replaced with 4uF Dynamicaps. This change provides more drive, bass extension, resolution and dynamics while also reducing grain. Highly specialized adjustable air-core capacitors, used primarily in the radio-frequency realm, are installed and adjusted to "tweak" each unit to a rigid standard.

JUPITER POWER SUPPLY DETAIL

One defining characteristic of the Jupiter Series is separate power supplies. Each main unit, or audio chassis, is dual mono in construction; there are completely separate left and right audio boards and each has its own power connector on the rear of the chassis. Each main unit requires at least one power supply, a single power supply cannot power both an Io and a Callisto.

The Jupiter Series Power Supply is the size of a power amplifier and weighs approximately 50 pounds. The Power Supply has two main sections, the heater supply and the high voltage plus and minus supplies. At the heart of the heater supply is its massive, low flux, 210 VA power transformer which has fourteen separate secondary windings that are individually regulated and supply both the Power Supply and main unit heaters. The high voltage supply is composed of a similar massive 170 VA transformer which feeds a common-mode choke input filtering network and then high current vacuum tube regulators (one EL34/6CA7, three 12AX7 tubes per regulator). Each regulator is capable of supplying 600 volts at 100mA. There are two such regulators in the Power Supply. Each separate amplification or buffer stage has its own power supply filtering network and regulated heater supply to isolate individual sections and prevent stage interaction.

CALLISTO REMOTE CONTROL

"In practice, (the remote) is a marvel to use and makes listening to music a joy." -Albert Porter, Positive-Feedback.com (2006, CALLISTO linestage with remote),

The Callisto may optionally be configured with remote control. This is not your average remote control, it is an entire system consisting of a main remote receiving / control unit and large stepper motors that turn the volume controls through a belt drive system. The system is completely electrically isolated from the Callisto, there is not even a ground connection between them! Audio performance of the Callisto is not compromised in any way with the addition of the remote control system.

Main unit

The main control unit contains the power supplies necessary to drive the stepper motors, the IR receiver, control system and displays. The display is a large four-digit blue LED numeric, which can indicate both left and right volume levels at the same time. There are four buttons on the main control unit: Volume Up, Volume Down, Mute and Phase.

Motors

The main control unit is connected to the Callisto through an RS232 cable. Inside the Callisto, there are two large high-torque stepper motors (one per channel) that are connected to the volume shafts through belts and pulleys. Also at each volume control is an optical sensor system that allows the remote system to determine if the user has manually changed the volume control and display the change.

Mute

A small circuit board is added at the rear of the Callisto with muting relays. These relays are not in the signal path, they simply short the output signal to ground when muted.

Phase

This is an option with the remote system. Two small circuit boards are added with phase relays.

Handheld remote

The handheld remote provides direct access to the following functions:

    Volume Up

    Volume Down

    Balance Left

    Balance Right

    Mute

    Phase (optional)

The High End Zone, is a full service audio and home theater dealer offering superb gear at substantial discounts. That's our demo theater above, loaded with the gear that I love and the same gear that we love to sell, Runco, Revel, JL Audio, McIntosh, Anthem, Lexicon and more.

The High End Zone is all about listening to good music, talking to clients around the world by email, and helping people get the most joy out of the time and money they invest in their high-end audio and theater hobbies. If you're a successful individual, you and your family should be able to enjoy beautiful music and video in your home affordably, and the buying process should be fun, not a chore. We're dedicated to that and I hope we get the chance to sell you something that you and your family can enjoy together for a long time in good health, just as my family and I enjoy our several high-end audio and video systems!

The Fine Print:

Our items are guaranteed to work properly and be in the condition we describe. If we make a mistake, if an item does not work properly, or if the item description is inaccurate, we'll offer you a full and prompt refund or exchange and issue return shipping labels at our expense.

This item is a consignment item, please read the listing and be informed that this sale will be sealed and complete 30 days after you receive the item in the guaranteed condition.

In rare cases we have allowed a return to happen for a 20% restocking fee but we will not be able to do this for our consignment items after 30 days. This includes sales where the buyer "changes his mind", where his wife beats him over the head for spending too much money, where some unforeseen crisis, financial or otherwise, strikes the buyer, his family, his friends/business/job/pets/favorite sports team/etc. or any other reason that the buyer may seek to cancel the sale or return the item for some reason other than a mistake or discrepancy on High End Zone's part. And this includes cases where the buyer changes his mind and wants to cancel the sale before he even receives the item, possibly before we even ship it. We are a small company and the moment a buyer commits to purchase one of our items we are redeploying our capital to get other items for our customers to buy. If you decide 2 hours after you buy something that you don't want it anymore, chances are we've already spent the money to restock. So the restocking fee absolutely applies in all cases of buyers changing their minds, wanting to cancel a sale after it is agreed or returning an item for any reason other than High End Zone providing a flawed or incorrect item.

We can sometimes make an exception if you change your mind in order to buy something else that we can sell you, generally a higher model. For example, If you make a deal to buy a JL f113 from us and then you decide that what you REALLY want is a Gotham g213, then we can probably work it out to make that switch for you without a restocking fee. That said, please don't buy if you're not sure that you want the item you are buying. If you need to check with your wife, your broker, your business partner, your kids, or the Supreme Court before you buy, please do that. High End Zone cannot be held responsible for any case of wives beating their husbands for spending too much money on good gear.

Please check your purchases promptly upon arrival. A client purchased speakers from us and didn't open them for 6 months, then found that some parts were missing. We are doing our best to get those parts for him at no charge from the manufacturer but it would have been a LOT easier if he'd examined them upon receipt. In general, our policy is that any flaw, damage, missing item, incorrect item, etc. must be reported to High End Zone by email no later than 3 days (72 hours) after that item is delivered. If you are not able to check the item yourself in that time frame, please make the necessary arrangements to have someone else make such a check for you in your absence.

High End Zone is a full service home theater dealer located in Southwest New Mexico. While we are well established as the premier dealer in our small town market, we also serve many clients who have multiple homes or live in far-flung places. The world is increasingly a small place and I delight in talking with and serving clients from all continents and many countries of the world. Depending on your needs we are happy to just sell you gear (note some manufacturers may prohibit us from sending gear to certain places) or we can provide a full service experience including system design, acoustic design and construction, installation, programming, and more. We've done work for very high profile clients with multiple homes and we are also proud to serve many hobbyists who enjoy this hobby on a modest budget. No matter your budget, we'll strive to provide the products you want at a price that is fair with top shelf service.

*List includes lines we are factory direct with as well as lines we get through distribution or through our extensive dealer network. Most customers don't care whether we are factory direct if we provide authentic product and great service at a fair price, but if you care about this or any other issue, please ask us.

Unlike most shops that sell a very small number of lines that they are authorized for and will always try and talk customers in to buying just those few lines, we are willing to sell you virtually any line that you want. Obviously we make a lower profit if we have to get it from another dealer, but our goal is to provide you, the customer, with one stop shopping and top notch service. It's more like the business model of Amazon than the old school brick and mortar stores. We want the customer's business and we will try and earn it by providing competitive pricing and top notch service for you on whatever brands you want. Of course if you are not sure what brands are best for your needs and want us to provide expert analysis of what gear represents the best value for your dollar, we are more than happy to provide that too. We spend a great deal of time and money listening to and viewing a wide range of audio and video systems, as well as bringing in gear for long-term testing in our facilities. Most of the salesmen you might deal with in a home theater store do NOT have a high-end audio video system in their homes. I have 4 such systems, including Runcos in every nook and cranny, and I live with this stuff daily. So I truly know what works well and what is worth spending money on and what is not. And even if I used something for years and loved it, when I hear something better, that is a better value, I switch immediately. My main loyalty is to the customer and your satisfaction--I want you to buy not just one thing from us, but all your gear, for life, and to recommend us to your friends and family. To that end, I will strive to give you the best and most honest advice, fair prices and great service. And I'll try to get you any brand you want, ultimately your system needs to satisfy you, not me.

Our clients certainly enjoy their home theaters. We do as well and hope you'll also take pleasure and be inspired by the variety of these beautiful installations.

A picture is certainly worth a thousand words but some aspects of making an informed choice in a home theater system are worth a little extra effort.
