Despite all of the magical qualities of our others 300B power amplifiers, some people like the perspective of being front row center or even the middle of the orchestra rather than row M. We thought about it for a while. Almost anyone can make an amp that plays loud. That wasn't hard. The hard part is that we at Canary committed ourselves to bring out the purity of music. We didn't want an amp that played loud. We wanted one that could sing loudly.
Built around Matched EL34 / 6CA7:
We finally decided to build a pair of mono blocks amplifier around four matched pairs of EL34 / 6CA7 tubes in push-pull dual mode (triode / ultra-linear) circuit. To get the most out of our design, only highest quality parts and components are used in critical applications and Hovland MusiCaps® are used in key circuit locations. We then hand wired them point to point with Teflon coated silver wire. The oversize custom wound power and output transformers are specially designed to extend the bass and highs. An independent, choke filtered high voltage supplies is used for each channel. Just as important, the military grade epoxy circuit boards are designed to minimize component interaction. In addition to that, each of the EL34 tube has a separate bias adjustment pot mounted on the panel. There is also a small toggle switch mounted on the rear of the amplifier to let you select operation in either triode or ultra-linear mode.
An Amplifier that Sings Loudly:
This is certainly not the high power that makes cars bounce up and down or PA announcers sound like they are sitting in the next row. Neither of those put out anything that sounds like music. The CA-160 is an amp that can sing and it sings loudly.
