Custom 5Y3/6SN7/76 or 37 tube line stage preamp with separate power supply

This is a custom tube line stage preamp made by Oliver J W
Sayes (aka sonic_oli) in New York.  The
huge (24 lbs.) separate power supply uses a 5Y3 rectifier.  The preamp uses 6SN7’s and either type 76 or
37 tubes.  No adjustment is needed to
switch between the 76 and 37, just swap tubes and go.  The volume control is a TKD 2CP-2508 Series Stereo Volume
Potentiometer.  Upgraded capacitors are Jupiter copper foil wax & paper capacitors.  This preamp has 4 sets of inputs and 2
sets of outputs.  As you look at the
photos you will see the stereo volume knob on the left, the 4 input selector in
the center and an unused knob on the right. 
That knob is there because the original design called for separate right
and left volume controls, but I preferred the upgrade to the TKD stereo volume control.  The power cord linking the power supply and
preamp is 38” long, so they don’t have to be located side by side.

My all-time favorite preamps have used type 76 tubes.  I find them to have a great combination of
richness, detail and solid imaging.  This
particular preamp was made for me to go with the Korneff 45SE clone amp made by
the same maker. The 76’s can be replaced by 37 tubes with no adjustment needed.  The sound of the 37 is sweet, clean and
almost ethereal.  The variety of sounds
available by switching 6SN7’s, 76’s and 37’s give it
an unusual ability for you to tune it for your taste and system.
