Original manufacturer of the legendary Hovland MusiCap propylene-film and aluminum-foil capacitors, the HP-200 Preamp exudes a meticulous, sexy elegance rarely experienced in American audio design. 
Outside, the high build quality is evident to anyone who has ever had the simple pleasure of operating a Hovland component. Internally, the level of detail and execution goes quite a bit further to ensure longevity. For example, in the HP-200 especially, they designed a large attenuator array circuit board using their favorite metalfilm
resistors and high quality, dual hermetically sealed-in-glass rhodium-contact reed relays! Custom transformers and the use of proprietary silver plated wire in the shortened signal pathways ensure reliable, quiet operation.

The overall sonic character of Hovland components can be thought of as a confluence of the most desirable qualities of  AR, CAT, CJ and Jadis electronics combined...If you can imagine, colorful and rich, but lightening fast, with no overhang and congealing of massed instruments. In deference to the music, the HP-200 always harmonious and emotionally engaging, nothing is exaggerated! 
Remaining incredibly transparent without loosing subtle textures and shadings is a feat usually left to those components costing $ 10,000.00 or more.
When launched around 2003-4, the level of sophistication was worlds beyond what one expected at its original $ 7500.00 asking price.  
In today's market, you'd have to budget close to $ 8,000.00 to take your system to the next level of performance with regards to honesty and sheer musicality.
