The MR-200 mk. II is a balanced, 100 watt, hybrid tube amp.
The input is solid state, and the driver and output are pure tube. The amp
takes KT88s, 6550s or KT120s. The High Current version I have for sale is rare
and one of the best-sounding versions of the amp ever created by designer Roger
The amp’s sound is powerful and clean with a perfect dose of
wonderful tube bloom. Even while nicely laying out a broad soundstage, the amp
does something special to channel the main thrust of whatever music is being
played—a vocal, a driving beat, a piano line. I have found the MR-200 to be a near-perfect union of the virtues of solid state and tube amps.
The condition of the amp is excellent. I rate it 8/10 because of its age. I don’t see any
scratches on the metal nor on the wood base. I sent the amp back to Rodger in
early 2014 for a checkup (because of an intermittently faulty tube), and he
replaced some resistors simply out of caution. I’ve used the amp since 2011. It was built in 2010. I am
the second owner and have never had a functional issue with it.
The amp was featured in the November, 2011 Stereophile. Michael Fremer really liked
