My listening room is getting repurposed, so I’m downsizing to
one audio system and selling my wonderful Rogue Audio Sphinx hybrid integrated
I bought it in November 2014. from Needle Doctor, an authorized Rogue Audio dealer. I subsequently upgraded to a new pair of JJ-ECC802 gold pin 12AU7 preamp tubes that were matched by Tube Depot for balanced triodes and selected for low noise and low microphonics. To say that the sonic upgrade was significant is not a stretch.
What was a wonderful integrated amplifier was elevated to “stunning”. The Sphinx combines a tube preamp stage with a solid state power stage, and is easily
the most musical, nuanced and yet dynamic integrated amplifier I have ever owned. It rivals separates at more than twice the price.
I am conservatively rating it at 9/10, but it is essentially in new
condition. It has never come anywhere near smoke or pets.
I no longer have the original box but I am a packaging fiend, and can provide feedback on both audiogon and eBay to confirm. Some review quotes: “The
Spyinx played a wide range of high-quality loudspeakers with cunning authority. Its
tubed line stage had a sound that was highly detailed, dynamic, and surprisingly
transparent. Driven by a high-quality, high-output cartridge, the Rogue's
passive RIAA phono stage was more than just okay or even respectable—it did
high-speed boogie, air, and low-level subtlety.” Herb Reichert (Stereophile)“On CD
and high-resolution computer audio, this amp, for a lot less money, reminded me in
many ways of the very good Musical Fidelity M6, even though the two amplifiers
are about as different in concept and execution as you can find. Sonically
though, if not twins, they share an ease in presenting dynamics, both micro and
macro, which I have found to be the cornerstone to realistic and/or involving
audio reproduction. Vanishingly low distortion? Ultra-high resolving power?
Wide bandwidth? I’ll take ’em all . . .”
Ron Doering (The Absolute Sound)“Value never sounded so damn good.” Hans
