An incredibly sounding Integrated amp!

A very special and extremely limited (to 100 pieces) collaboration between VPI founder Harry Weisfeld and longtime friend Steve Leung of VAS Audio, the U.S.A.-made VPI 299D integrated tube amplifier is the stuff of high-end audio dreams. Inspired by the iconic H.H. Scott 299 amplifier made from 1958 through 1966, 299D features hand-performed point-to-point wiring, a healthy 38Wpc output with EL-34 tubes and 40Wpc with optional KT-88s, and four sets of RCA inputs. As you might expect given its VPI pedigree, 299D also comes with an astoundingly good MM phono preamplifier as well as an engrossing headphone amplifier. Weisfeld and Leung, who put his business phone number on the cover of the owner's manual, thought of everything – including the arresting sound.

Graced with a champagne-colored faceplate and knob controls that recall the hi-fi heydays of the late 1970s, 299D plays music with all the signature merits for which tubes are praised. Warm, full-bodied, dimensional, and balanced, 299D doesn't flinch on tough-to-reproduce low-end passages or treat the midrange with anything less than stellar fidelity. It also touts heavy-duty cable connectors specifically designed for 4- and 8-ohm speakers as well as an all-metal remote that lets you direct nearly every function from the comfort of your chair.
