From my post on the Head-Fi Lyr tube rolling blog:

All Voskhod Rockets 6n23p Kaluga factory:

#1 1975 Gray Shields - Supreme detail, coupled with this magical flow or liquidity to the music...just draws you in. I try to read while listening to my headphones. These just make you drop the book and turn the volume up. Sit back and enjoy the ride as they sweep you away. Rich textured tone, deep extended tight bass...Who said the HD800 have wimpy bass! Not with these. Sound stage - surround sound, reflected sounds actually project behind you! As well as wall to wall and 30 ft deep in front, with tons of air blooming from each instrument. The effect enhanced by closing your eyes. I did this last night...for 4 hours! Dead quite, zero floor noise, the incredible details just project from inky blackness...you really notice this at the end of songs as they fade into this deep black silence. The next track re-emerging, building, as you forget how high you’ve set the volume! Never harsh or brittle - and here is the magic, even at higher volume levels. Levels that would have you diving, on most other non-Super V-R tubes, to turn down as the etch becomes annoying.
With the sweet nature of these tubes, it allows you to add this additional volume, the sound becomes enveloping. You’re really projected into a different venue. What the high end headphone experience is all about!
These are my new reference tubes - so I will describe the other V-Rs based on these.

#2 1975 Silver Shields - these are almost a tie for first. They actually have even more detail! But lack a bit of the liquid flow that’s so captivating on the ’75 grays.
Also have the tonal richness and sweet character. Likewise the same bass extension and tightness. Ditto for the sound stage as above.

#3 1978 Silver Shields - Just a bit less detail then above. Great flow, slightly smaller sound stage - but still wide and deep compared to most tubes.

#4 1976 Gray Shields - A little less detail again. Good flow - the sound stage is very good.

#5 1977 Silver Shields - Very detailed, a little more analytical. Nice harmonically rich tone - The Prince of V-Rs.

#6 1974 Gray Shields - Very nice tube. Liquid mid range, sweet tonality. A slight reduction in the ultimate detail retrieval and sound stage width and depth. Good bass.

#7 1979 Silver Shields - Amazing detail and mid-range liquidity. This is were, what I refer to as the ’Super-Voskhods’, starts.

#8 1980 Silver Shields - Awesome tube - borders on greatness. Lacks the extreme detail of the above mentioned tubes. Also - not quite the tonal richness (would not recommend added volume with these)

#9 1979 Gray Shields - With the ’79s and ’80s the Silver variant is better - More detailed. That’s not true after ’79 - in fact the ’King’ is the ’75 Grays.

#10 The 1981 -1989s Gray or Silver - Good tubes, won’t bowl you over. Pleasant to listen to.

After that - the 1990s on - pretty pedestrian. These and the ’81-’89s are pretty typical of what’s available now on E-bay and through the Russian Dealers. I hope they don’t sour folks on the Voskhod magic.

This is just a mini-preview. I’ll go into more detail with pictures in my review. I still have to hear the ’73s and ’72s - but the structure of these is different. Similar to some ’70s Reflecktors. So I’m not expecting much.

Happy Listening!

Common characteristics of the 6n23p: good bass and dynamics. Now the best add high and low frequency extension, very high levels of detail (I hear faint background instruments and vocals deep into the mix - that I’ve not heard with other tubes), this high level of detail adds to a three dimensional holographic sound stage. The sound stage itself widens and deepens. Now the very rarest and best add a magical musicality, a natural flow to the music that is captivating - never harsh or etched. These rare versions are the best 6922 type tube I have ever owned.

From a long time Audiophile who bought a pair of the of the Gray Shield versions:
"Well........These tubes are GREAT man, they are everything you said they are...I had a short session with these and I got to say, that right of the bat the sound was superb and just got better with every minute...These tubes are far and away better then anything out there!!!"

From another long time Audiophile who bought a pair of the same version as these with the Silver Shields:
"Tubes came today.
You are right. The 74’s are pretty amazing.
Thank you."

Another Audiophile: "I’m definitely on board the Voskhod bandwagon, and it only took a quick 26 minute A/B test with the stock GE tubes. The mid/high frequency detail these bring out in electronic music is amazing, the low end is tight and punchy, just solid all around. It’s like all my memories just had a veil lifted."

Another Great Review from Lyr Tube Rolling Thread on HeadFi - Top 6n23p vs the best Siemens E88CCs
"Just got some lovely Russian tubes from Uncle RB! I believe they are the 1974 SWGP silver shields? Correct me if I’m wrong, sorry. So I just put these bad boys in my Lyr after listening to my Siemens E88CC gray electrostatic shields for the last time and I was for once shocked at the difference. I’m no audiophile so I can’t pick out very minor details so hearing this change was such a jaw dropping experience. My Siemens are considered "holy grail" by the Tube Museum and I was recommended by quite a few people at the Tube Museum to try them out and I did. They were already a big step up from the OGs and Matsu****a’s that I previously had. Anyway onto the initial impressions. So I firstly listened to Infected Mushroom - Heavy Weight and I was like what is this tube? I guess I wasn’t use to the sound. It was just all in my face and a bit loud. After about 10 minutes I began to realize how amazing these tubes actually are. It took a bit of time to adjust to their different sound and now I’m never going back to those Siemens! The sound stage is 12938190x bigger than the Siemens and LCD 2s arent known for their sound stage so it was quite incredible to hear such a big difference. The sound stage is very wide and deep with great instrument separation. The lows seem to extend as low as the Siemens did, sorry I am no audiophile as I said so I cannot tell if this is true or not but its what I have observed. The sub bass has more impact, texture and speed than the Siemens. It has more of a tighter and faster bass compared to the Siemens slower bass, yet it carries more impact and texture so totally on a whole new level in terms of lows. Since I am no audiophile, I can honestly hear no difference in the mids between these two tubes. They seem to be very neutral and sound the same to my ears anyway. Sorry I could not evaluate the differences more, my ears aren’t the best haha. Timbre is also something that I couldn’t hear a difference in, they both sound identical to my ears but this could easily change during burn in of the tubes. The highs are already brighter than the Siemens slightly but it is a noticeable difference. It is never fatiguing but remains very detailed and as cliche as it sounds, I have heard things in a few of the songs I’ve listened to already and I have heard things that I have never EVER heard before. Especially in a song such as Heavy Weight. Overall the sound is on a whole new level compared to the Siemens E88CCs and were cheaper than the price of my Siemens. I will continue to burn these bad boys in and see if I see a difference. Oh and note that these Russian tubes are fatter or wider than the normal 6922/E88CC tubes. My tube dampers had to be stretched to be placed around the tube because of the added width so bare that in mind. Thank you so much RB for selling me these tubes, they are truly amazing. I wish to hear the HG’s sometime soon in the near future. Cheers!"

The truth about how great these are is finally getting out, the 1980s 6n23ps are very good, the average ’70s better - these very rare versions are extraordinary!!

6922, 6DJ8, CCa, ECC188,7308, ECC88, CV5358 equivalent.

These are the sweetest, most musical, finely detailed tube of this type I have ever heard. And are extremely rare in matched yr date codes, shield color and output.

I have owned virtually all the best 6922 type tubes, these are some of my favorites! These 70’s vintage Voskhods are getting quite a following and are becoming harder and harder to find as date and output matched pairs. Many are finding they rival the very best of the European and US tubes. I have tested against the Siemens ’60s gray shield CCa and the Amperex White Label 7308s USNs - and I preferred the Voskhod Rockets and a special version of the Reflektors (with the single wire getter posts).

These have been tested on my Sencor TC-162 tester and passed with flying colors for no shorts, gas, and output.

Where Min = 50 and New = 100 these tested:

Tube 1: 98/98
Tube 2: 96/97

Matched pair.

I reject 10 tubes for each one I sell!

By with confidence - read my feedback - THE TUBES I SELL ARE THE EXACT ONES PICTURED AND DESCRIBED (not the case with many dealers!)
Before I sell a pair the pins are treated with DeoxIT ProGold, they then go through a complete checkup.

But due to their age they are sold "as is" with absolutely no refunds.
I have other matched pairs and quads of these amazing tubes with different years available at lower prices. Just send me a message.

Thanks for looking!

International buyers OK (by country), with good feedback. Please add $8.50 for S&H in US, International $19
