Up for sale is my beloved McIntosh MR-71 FM tuner, the best all tube FM tuner McIntosh ever built. I bought it over 20 years ago from the original owner. Then, I had it shipped to Audio Classics for the Richard Modafferi modification, which currently costs $1,000. It has been recently checked out and realigned by a local old McIntosh guy. It sounds beautiful. All of the lights work (the "stereo" light is not lit because it is not tuned into a station in the picture). There are no chips in the glass. The lettering is intact. The chrome is bright and unpitted. The walnut case is very nice, but the PanLocs need to be reattached. Or you can rest the tuner in the case without the PanLocs. Or you can display it bare like I did, to show off the lovely chrome chassis and tubes. I do not have the original box and packaging, but it will ship carefully packed in the same sturdy double box I received it in from Audio Classics. I am selling only because we moved last year and I have had nowhere to use and enjoy it in our new house, and it has taken me this long to reluctantly give it up. The Modaferri modification is extensive:

Modafferi Mod

  1. B- power supply - improved regulation, less hum.

  2. RF selectivity improved for better spurious rejection.

  3. IF regeneration fixed - better weak signal reception.

  4. IF 'tailbiting' fixed - this eliminates degraded reception
at 96.3 and 107.0 Mhz from ninth and tenth IF harmonics.

  5. Stereo decoder slew-rate optimized by modifying op-amp
feedback circuits; reduces distortion, improves separation.

  6. diode D307 installed (this was left out of MR78 but was
used in MR77); this reduces 'klunk' noises on fixed output
jacks when tuner is turned on and off.

  7. IF phase trimming - 'gimmick' capacitors added as needed in
NORMAL IF filter for improved stereo separation.

  8. RF oscillator emitter tap re-dressed for minimum leakage
inductance; reduces drift and eliminates oscillator
    pulling on strong signals.

  9. Jung-Marsh capacitor upgrade in MPX and audio circuits.

  10. cardas audio output, midas scope output jacks installed.

  11. Muting ground changed - improved muting performance.

  12. 19Khz stereo pilot circuit change, reduces stereo distortion.

  13. Buffer resistor installed in pointer lamp circuit, prevents
lamp heat from burning red light filter material. See more here: http://www.audioclassics.com/mods

Questions for the seller
Do you have the paperwork for the mods done to the unit?
Yes. I have included images of the paperwork and I will include it with the shipping. This is a beautiful sounding FM tuner that I am very ambivalent about selling, but have to let go.
