Not much needs to be said about the legendary Gerrard 401 and its fantastic idler wheel and all the PRaT it promises. This one has been painstakingly
upgraded by the inimitable, golden-eared and generally wonderful Jean Nantais himself. His work with Lencos is legendary and his work with other Idlers is no different. New precision bearing, 120V motor, new wiring, dual platter rings, Herbies’
platter matt, IEC socket, massive Mapleshade brass footers, and other special tricks he adds but won’t disclose.
The 401 itself shows some cosmetic issues but functionally it is perfect. Better
than perfect, in fact. I set the speed once and never had to readjust it in 2 years. All housed in
a beautiful 75 lb. plinth of Jean’s own making with immaculate black oak veneer. 50hz platter so strobe does not work but you can source a digital tachometer for around $20 or so that displays in LED and will help you dial in the speed. I personally use a KAB speed strobe.

Come with Jean’s recommended tonearm, the new-production 12”
SME M2-12R. Comes with TWO headshells – consider one a gift even though it
normally only comes with one and they are quite pricey and hard to find on
their own. Also comes with one of the better sounding phono cables out there,
the VDH D50 phono cable. Fantastic sounding tonearm that works for all cartridge weights
