This well-reviewed turntable and tonearm look and sound amazing! Turntable is a very-rare “Brooksmod” Oracle Delphi Mk 2.
Brooks Berdan was a renowned analog aficionado who opened an audio store, Brooks Berdan Ltd, in Monrovia CA, which is still in business. He repaired and modified (“Brooksmods”) many turntables. In April 1994, Stereophile magazine christened Berdan "Mr. Analog."
I purchased this turntable as a Brooksmod, but later travelled to his home in La Verne CA to have him upgrade and tune it for the attached Grado Signature Tonearm.
The Brooksmod included:
- A very large and heavy round steel "hockey puck" weight beneath the Oracle's floating platform to improve stability and bass response.
- Replacing the PIA collar and weight system in the suspension with a simplified system that made setup easier and improved performance.
- Modifications to the tonearm mount and RCA connection box.
The Grado Signature tonearm received many favorable reviews from high-end audio magazines. Benz Micro cartridge still works. Upgraded turntable mat to Audioquest Sorbothane. I purchased a new belt & included the old one as well.
This turntable has been in storage for about 10 years. To make-sure it was functioning optimally, I took it to a dealer in San Diego recently that had installed its Benz Micro cartridge for a checkup. Everything is balanced properly and “sounded great.”
