The following is taken from the instruction manual.  "The small signal tube tester is designed for use by audio professionals, repair shops and the audio enthusiast.  The feature that sets this tube tester apart is the ability to listen to noise and microphonics while the tube is functioning in a typical Class A circuit.  You can perform noise and microphonic evaluation, test the gain of the tube in the circuit and compare and match tubes.  Maximum output before clipping is tested.  This tester gives a reading in db of gain which is more useful and intuitive for most people than the mutual transconductance reading known as gm."
