Description

Starting to really like my sound. I've had some bass difficulties due to being in a small room. The corner bass traps made a significant improvement in this area. I may consider adding more bass traps in the rear corners. Comments welcome. Thanks for checking out my system!

Components Toggle details

    • Rega RP-40
40th anniversary special edition turntable. Based on rp3. Rega added some cool upgrades to make it unique.  I have a Hana EL cartridge, Groovetracer reference subplatter, and Herbies turntable mat installed as well.
    • Ifi Audio iphono2
Fantastic phono that is flexible enough to work with virtually any cartridge.
    • PS Audio DL III
Just a great analog sounding DAC.
    • Cary Audio Design CAD-808,Rocket 88r
Circa 2003 tube amp. It can run 60 watts per channel ultra linear or 30 watts triode. I run it exclusively in triode as the Gemmes are very efficient speakers.
    • Gemme Audio Tanto
Small 1.5 way floorstanding speakers. I love their transparency and absolutely incredible bass. 4 ohm drivers and no crossover to speak of means they are super efficient. Very easy to drive as long as your amp is comfortable with a 4 ohm load.
    • PS Audio Quintet
Power conditioner. I've been using the quintet forever. It does the job. I have thought a lot about upgrading. But, I'm not sure the benefits would be justified because I'm already running a dedicated 20 amp circuit.
    • JPS Labs Ultraconductor 2
All analog interconnects in the system. I fell in love with the JPS sound and have been using their cables ever since.
    • JPS Labs Ultraconductor 2
Speaker cables. Been using them for a long time and really love the JPS sound.  Would consider moving up the JPS line at some point.
    • Cardas Audio DigitalLink
Coax cable. Thought about going with jps on this too. But, this was cheap at the time...
    • Pangea Audio AC-9, AC-14
All power cables are pangea audio. Excellent value for dollar. Digital equipment gets AC-14. Analog equipment gets AC-9.
    • Cardas Audio Myrtle Wood Blocks
I don't know how well these things work for isolation. But, they look nice under the DAC, Phono pre, and TT-PSU.
    • Vibrapod Vibrapods
Using these for isolation under sonos.
    • Sonos ZP-90
Just a stock zp-90 pulling files from a NAS device. I would love to get my hands on a Cullen modified version.
    • Dedicated AC Line 10 Guage Romex
Running a dedicated 20 amp circuit with 10 Guage Romex.
    • PS Audio Power Port
    Wall outlet everything plugs into.
    • Foam Factory Bass Traps
Corner bass traps. They help big time!
    • Sonex Foam Panels
Added behind speakers, on each side wall for first reflection, and behind listening position.
    • Audio Electronic Supply Constellation
Just a basic 3 input and 1 output tubed line stage made by Cary. Really great value in my opinion.
    • Generic Audio Rack Generic
I've had this rack forever. It is a cheap ebay purchase. I just filled the metal posts with sand and replaced the glass shelves with homemade wooden shelves. The wooden shelves are a definite improvement over glass.
    • Rega Turntable Wall Mount
Putting the turntable on a wall mount might be one of the best low cost tweaks you can do. Not sure if the Rega mount is any better than other brands or even just a homemade shelf.
    • Rega TT-PSU
Power supply that goes with rp40.
    • Herbies Audio Lab Way Excellent Turntable Mat
This is a nice upgrade over the felt mat that Rega provides.  I've never used any other table mat.  So, I can't speak to how it compares with other options that are available.
    • Hana EL
Low-output moving coil cartridge.  Made in Japan by the OEM that makes some of the Benz Micro cartridges.  This is a reasonably priced way to get into a moving coil cartridge.
    • Groovetracer Reference Subplatter
    Installed on the RP40

The Sonex definitely helps out.  My system is in a small dedicated room.  So, room reflections are a problem.  I have the panels placed behind each speaker, at first reflection points to each side, and behind my listening position.  There's no question to my ears that it improves detail, clarity, and imaging.  The corner bass traps are probably even more important if you're working in a small space.

Beautiful system in a beautiful room! Thank you for sharing. I was wondering if the Sonex foam panels make a big difference and are worth the price?
