Description

She's coming along nicely. I said I'd upgrade my system until it hits the price (MSRP) I paid for my house which is $118K. With the price on this gear increasing due to inflation, it's at just over $112K right now. So I'll eat a few more ramen noodle dinners and make it happen. If you have any suggestions on possible upgrades to spend the last $6K, please let me know! I know I could just get expensive cables, but there's got to be something more fun than that. :P

*Update 1/17/23: I swapped out the Furman power conditioner for the McIntosh MPC1500 Power Controller a couple months ago, and this morning I finished setting up the MT-10 Turntable. I also got a couple more stereo 3.5mm cables to connect to the TT and power controller so that they would backlight correctly when the system is powered on.

*Update 1-4-22: I got a shaggy rug to better absorb room reflections, and the fabulous JBL K2-S9900 speakers. I can't fit an inch more stereo into this room now, haha. My wall is maxed out.

*Update 2-4-20: Spent an entire day and a half rebuilding the Salamander A/V rack taller so it would accommodate the bigger amps and the heavier weight. Installed the new McIntosh MC1.25KW monoblock amps and C53 solid state preamp. (Replacing the previous MC601 monoblocks and C2600 preamp) Also installed a Marantz reference turntable and KI-Ruby SACD player. I installed a Goldring Eroica LX low output moving coil cartridge on the turntable as well. I put new heavy duty caster wheels on the rack so they would roll better under the additional weight. These amps are 158lbs each! My whole body is sore somehow too, haha.

*Update 12-13-19: I've got 3 sound panels up printed with my photos like large canvases. The vertical blinds are up, and the walls have recessed panels and trim is done. Rugs are down, as well, so the overly lively sound is controlled much better. I've upgraded the power conditioner to a Furman SPR-20I Voltage regulator and mounted the TV a few months back as well.

After completing the system yesterday I remember how therapeutic listening to hi-fi really is. I sat in my chair from about 5:00pm until 1:00am in the morning until I fell asleep. It sounds good already, but the speakers need some break-in and the room is pretty lively at the moment. Curtains and more furniture should help out. After that's done, I'll decide if it needs additional sound treatment.

My dream stereo in progress. I've spent the last six months screwing up the wood floors in attempt to refinish them. The stain pulled up and mixed in with the varnish creating a muddy mess. After re-sanding and refinishing, I'm done working on the floors and I need my stereo fix.

I've heard the K2 S9900 speakers a couple times and they're absolutely awesome!!!  Overall, for my taste, and especially for the money, I still prefer my beloved Revel Salon 2s.  Congrats!!!

kennymacc. Thank you! Well I kept the JBL's. The Salon 2's are a fantastic speaker and a reference for Absolute Sound and Stereophile for years now. That said, the JBL K2's are on a whole other level. The amount of resolution they have is astounding. They also have great bass and impact as well. The 4" compression mid/tweet will make you question every other speaker.

toro3. Agree'd. Thank you!

I don’t care what anyone says, McIntosh gear looks beautiful with their signature indigo blue. Terrific system with those JBLs.

Hello,
Great system you have there, my friend.  Question:  So, if you had to keep just one pair of your speakers, which would it be, the Revel or the JBL?  I own a pair of the incredible Revel Salon 2 speakers that I'll probably keep forever.
Thank you

Thanks Scott!

That’s a great looking system, Clint. The JBLs are stunning. Your floor was worth all the trouble you dealt with, it looks fantastic.

Cheers,

My system officially broke $100,000 m.s.r.p. last night. Kind of seems surreal. Never in my life did I think it would ever get to this point. I've been blessed. I'm far from the income class that would be able to have a system like this, but I kept at it and made it a priority, one upgrade at a time. It's a bit like how a diamond is formed, constant pressure over time and you can achieve something great! Now it's time to celebrate.

Just seeing your comment now. I don't get on here much, but thanks! I remember you and your friend. It's a small world. Cheers!

Nice looking system Clint. And I have heard the system in your shop. I got my A21 amp from you. And last Jan my friend got the Revel F36 from you. Happy listening.

CB, I just saw your comment so sorry for the late response. Thank you, well I sell audio for a living and I've got the Salon 2's at the store. I was interested in the slightly higher sensitivity of the Studio 2's, and the increased immediacy that might bring. I wasn't disappointed. The Revel Be tweeter is among my favorite tweeters of all time.

Great setup, first class gear and presentation.  One of the very best I've seen on Audiogon.  How did you select the Revel Ultima Studio2 speakers for this system and what you think of them?

Updates: I had sound panels printed with my photography and hung them up in the room, and reinstalled my vertical blinds so reflections are controlled better. I don't have any problem with the way the room sounds at the moment, though, I plan on doing two more panels anyway. Also swapped out the Panamax for a Furman SPR-20i conditioner.

I'm not tube rolling, just stock McIntosh tubes for now. The room is a little live, but we'll see how it sounds once I get sound reducing drapes up. Then I'll decide if I need acoustical panels or not. The bass in the room is nice.

audiobroke

Any update on tube rolling? I found Tekefunken NOS work great in the phono stage and I replaced one McIntosh 12AX7 in the line stage for a 50’s RCA long black plate which works brilliantly.

FR (Jeff): What makes you think he has "lively highs" ?

spinaker01

Very nice:

How is bass in room?
Nice & tight?

Have you tamed the lively highs?

Thanks! Right now just stock tubes in the C2600. The system barely has maybe 35 hours on it now, so still breaking everything in.

audiobroke

Wow. What an awesome setup. Not just stunning to look at but you have classic legendary gear. Are you using stock tubes in your C2600 or have you tried some NOS tubes?

shadorne

Finishing floors can be tricky. Be patient and take the time to finish it properly  before you set up your system. I know when your excited to set up your new system it can be hard. You'll be happier in the long run with no regrets.
We'll wait for your upcoming posts.
