Second owner here. Very little use. I personally know the English fellow that brought these from England 50+ years ago. They work great as far as I’ve used them, but I’ve decided that I’m really not worthy of them and I can’t bear to put them within reach of my five children.
I’m completely open to folks that know more about these guiding me with regards to shipping, best practices, the condition grading, etc.

Your listing says that “they work great as far as I’ve used them.” Yet in your response to the question below you can’t remember what amp you have used and only recall plugging them in. And you tell someone who wants to come to you to demo them to bring their own amp. This sounds very sketchy. And for that reason, I’m out Completely understandable, but allow me to clarify: I am not an audiophile. I read up on them enough to warm them up and gently roll up the volume enough to get fantastic sound through them using an amp years ago. Because this is not my jam and my children break everything, I’ve never put them into service daily.
You are welcome to bring any equipment you wish and fully test them to your satisfaction should you choose to pursue this transaction.
Sorry for any confusion and thanks for your time. Also, feel free to make an offer! |
I would talk to Sheldon Stokes. he is expert at Quad ESLs and specializes in rebuilding them. you might not want to have them rebuilt and instead sell them as is. But by talking with him, you can Get a really good understanding of what is involved and how much it would cost to rebuild. Sheldon also knows the values on these units quite well. he sometimes has a pair or two for sale. you can find Sheldon at quadesl dot com. your units are special with your knowledge of their history. They deserve to be played and enjoyed. Sheldon can give you some good info Thanks so much! I’ll check him out |
What amp have you been using with these? I followed the suggested plugging in for 48 hours a while back and then gently rolled the volume up on perhaps a Sony? I have never consistently used these. |
even though they 'work fine as far as you have used them'... these almost certainly need a rebuilt. Even if never used.. a Quad ESL from the years they made 57's will for sure have components in the power supply that have aged, as well as glues and materials in the panels. Your speakers look pretty good for 50 years old. But just the nature of time and materials science. These are aged. THEY NEED A REBUILD. For sure.
if that had already been done, they would have already sold.
imho I appreciate the info! The prices vary so wildly for these — I had to start somewhere. What do you suggest? |
Hello. Assuming these are still available, are you open to an in person demo before finalizing a purchase? Absolutely! I’d suggest you bring an amp of your choice.
