Description

Needed a personal retreat for music and movies so we converted the den into a dedicated theater and listening room. First thing was to enclose the room. Doorway and the plain wall next to it are new. Then cut into the wall to create the equipment rack. The wall backed up to a guest coat closet. This provides easy walk-in access to the back of the equipment through the closet. Installed dedicated power supply connected to Wattgate power outlet. Added carpeting and draperies along with Echo Busters to tame the acoustics of the room. Thanks to Dan Harmon at Dedicated Audio in Phoenix for so much great help, advice and service.

Stunning System!

I made the upgrade from the Krell showcase amp to the Krell KAV-2250 2x250 and it has made the biggest improvement in my music listening. I think the power from the Showcase is good for center and surround duty but your 803's will really open up with the 2250. Beautiful room by the way. Great gear too. I would never leave the house :-)

The Krell was a challenge. I was switching from a B&K receiver which worked nicely with silver cables. Those same cables with the Krell were an instant debacle. After experimenting with several alternatives, found Cardas Golden Cross to be the most satisfying cable for this system. Of course, cable is very subjective so the next guy might say I'm crazy but that's how it worked out. After getting that settled, the Krell turned out to be very revealing and powerful. The details, the presence and the punch of movie soundracks never let me down. Music sounds pretty good, too. Don't think you can go too far wrong with Krell.

Thanks Mark How do you like the Krell with the 803'2 Thinking of making the plunge

Thanks, Glen. Putting the components in the wall has worked out well. And it's the first system I've had where you don't see cables running around the room to the speakers. They run under the floor from the closet to positions just behind the front speakers.

marcgerber

Great room, with some monster gear. Like your having the components in the closet where it does not take up floor space, but yet can still be seem. Two thumbs up!

Thanks. The lights are on the same universal remote as the system itself so when the movie starts, the lights dim like a real theater. It's very effective.

I used the InFocus branded wall mounts. They were made by an outside supplier that make the mounts that are in general use. Hopefully they have a model that will work. Perhaps InFocus could give you the name of the source that made the mounts for this set. Good luck.

Fantastic looking room... very impressive. I think your use of lighting makes a nice aesthetic impact.

pdreher

Marc, did you use the InFocus branded Wall Mounts or a 3rd-party wall mount system? I have a 61MD10 set that I would like to wall mount but can't find the InFocus Wall Mount braces for sale anywhere. Thx

I love this room! Looks like you could really enjoy a good movie in there as well as listen to a few great tunes. Well done!

My room has a cathederal ceiling and the effect of reflected sound was pronounced. Adding the carpet, draperies and acoustical panels helped considerably. I could add more panels to the walls and put them on the ceilings but it would look awful and I'm content with the room's performance as is.

marcgerber

Very nice Marc. I'm a huge fan of the "clean" look. This must have required a lot of planning, I'm sure. You should post more pics of the room. Back end look tight a little, no?

cheers

Marc,
What are the dimensions of your room? I am planning to convert a bonus room in my house into a a/v room such as yours. Have any thoughts on acoustics in a room with cathedral or vaulted ceilings?

For the digital out, the Cardas Lightning 15. For 5.1 out, Cardas Golden Cross. For redbook CD's, Cardas Golden Reference. For stereo out to the headphone amp, Cardas Neutral Reference. Power cord is Cardas Golden Reference. Thanks.

marcgerber

Hi. Just a quick question. Which interconnect and which power cord do you use with your DV-50 S ?
Thanks.

Sorry to hear of your difficulties, Frank. My processor makes the switch automatically every single time. Whether it's called on to switch to Pro Logic, Dolby Digital or DTS, I've had no problems with it. On the other hand, I'm on my second HD Tivo unit. Six months after I got the first one, it started overheating and shutting down every 24 hours. Direct TV replaced it and the new one overheats occasionally, too. The unit has a pretty bad reputation in general. Can't see how it could be the source of your problem but maybe it's the Tivo unit. Good luck.

great system mine is almost the same other than the video iam using a runco plasma. i just added the krell showcase processor and amp before i was using a rotel receiver but now since i added the krell i have a problem when using the direct tv receiver yes it is the same one you have the problem is when i am swiching channels from dolby 5.1 program to pro logic program i have no sound or the other way around from pro logic to dolby 5.1 to get the sound back what i have to do is go to the front panel of the krell processor and push the mode 1 button and then the sound comes back this happens just about all the time i went to krell with the unit and they said they fixed the problem they did not when i got it back home it did the same thing remind you this is a new unit so i put back my old receiver and like before it worked great so again i put back the krell and the problem was there again how can krell tell me it is now ok if the do not have a direct tv receiver set up. please i need your help are you having or did you have the same problem that i am having or do you know how to correct this please let me know. thanks for your tme. Would love to move the 803's further out from the wall but the room is not that big, only seats four. As it is, the sofa is only ten feet from the front right and left speakers. Move them any closer and you'll feel like they're in your lap. But thanks for the suggestion. I'll probably try it out just for the heck of it.

marcgerber

Owner
Look closely at the first picture, the one that looks into the room. You can see the sofa and one of the surrounds mounted on the ceiling.

marcgerber

Owner
Thanks for your kind words. No, it is not a plasma TV. It's a rear projection set by Infocus. It's seven inches deep and looks great hanging on the wall instead of a desktop. Not entirely fond of plasma. For me, this looks more like film.

marcgerber

you have a nice room to enjoy & relax and i bet your system sounds good too can you show back of this room to see the surround set up so good luck & enjoy.
