Description

Room Treatment
5/2016 - New room treatment with absorption for main room modes and lots of diffusion. Now working on improving lateral first reflection room treament.
Results tested with my ears and with Earthworks M30/Roland Quadcapture/REW.

Performed several mods to the Dunlavy SC-VI speakers:

(A) External crossovers with original circuit topology:
     (i) upgraded caps and inductors to Duelund CAST copper for the main path,
(ii) all resistors to Path Audio (sound better than Duelund cast in my crossover),
(iii) Duelund RS caps for the secondary path and
(iv) Duelund cast/Mylar for the 220uf in the secondary path,
     (v) Duelund cast silver bypass caps for high and mid CAST copper caps,
(vi) Changed binding posts to Furutech FT-806R.
(vii) Kept the two original crossovers for reference, and
(viii) Final form of external enclosure and vibration control completed in 2017.
(viii) Put the crossovers on top of two Finite Elemente Pagode Master Reference Mk.II

(B) changed the tweeters to top of the line Seas Crescendo (listened and measured frequency response and impulse response - great improvement, if they did not sound and measure better I would have put back the original Vifa tweeters - yes, this is a radical change),

(C) Plan to replace the internal rewiring of the speakers with top hook up wires from Neotech and Mundorf.

Thanks for your suggestions of additional changes.

Hello Jazzonthehudson,

I tried a few. I tried the Audience AR6-TS, and still have it in part of my system, but I prefer the PS Audio for the most part. I bought a PS P10, but have not received it yet. At some point I would like to try the Equi=Tech, perhaps to power the preamp.

I will take a look at the Symposium Svelte shelves. Thanks for the suggestion.

Cheers,

Buom dia Vicente,

Perusing through some systems as I am getting an idea which power conditioning is used in higher end systems, I came across yours.

Similar to your system, I started with Krells and Dunlavy SC IV and am using Conrad Johnson LP140 mono blocks to drive my Sovereign 2001. I thought about upgrading the crossovers but so far have only replaced the binding posts, replaced all driver mounting screws with brass and just put some small Mondorf Supreme Silver Gold Oil across the tweeter and midrange caps.

You may want to try Symposium Svelte shelves under the speakers (you need at least two per speaker), I started with BDR, then Aurio sandwiched between granite tiles but the Svelte works better for me on wooden floor.

Maybe someday you can setup the SC VI on the long wall.

Back to the power conditioning. Since I don't have voltage fluctuation and have three dedicated lines, I like to stay with passive solutions like the Audience I currently have. I presume you have tested many before settling on PS Audio?

Vicente - I tried to answer your email, but ran into trouble signing in.Assuming that you disn't get my reply, I said the following: I preferred the Ayre to the Vitus because the Ayre sounded more lively. But the Vitus was very good -- very smooth sounding.Regards, Kusina

I should report that I have some room mode problems below 300hz and Dirac Live works quite well. I have been doing most of my listening with a Dirac Live filter that corrects only up to 1Khz.

I have also been doing more simulations, adjusting positioning, room treatment, etc to improve as much as possive.

vn101606

The only suggestion I can make is, enjoy!

Congrats and regards,

I bought a second pair or Krell fbp 750mcx, a Pass XVR-1 3x and interconnects/cable to biamp the Dunlavy SC-VI. I will use the extra set of Krell exclusively for the 4 x 15” woofers.

Question for those with experience in biamping:

The passive crossover circuit for the parallel 15” drivers has a series inductor of 6.8mH (first order crossover), and then a RC circuit (Zobel – for impedance equalization) with R= 0R37 (6x 2R2 in parallel) and C of 220uF.

When I biamp with the new set of 750mcx, should I: (i) remove only the inductor and leave the parallel RC, or (ii) remove also the parallel RC?

Of course I can try both alternatives, listen and measure, but I would like your opinions.

Hi Barry,

Based on your experience, I bought a Cable Cooker Aniv. Ed. to cook the Duelunds and the cables. Nice improvement of the interconnects. It should take a couple of months to assemble the crossovers.

Regarding the DIRAC, my initial impression is quite good. It does not seem to take away anythiing, and allows one to decrease the room modes and correct, at least 80% - 90% the frequency response. I made filters with different slopes from lows to highs and so far I prefer with some slope.

I got the calibration file of the Earthworks M30 and have been trying many alternatives, including also changes in the room.

vn101606

Great system! Never heard the SC-VI's only the IVs and was quite taken by them. I too am interested in your results with DIRAC. On the XO see my post but I wasn't able to completely burn in the big 17uF cap until I used a cable cooker and then it was a revelation - maybe you'll have better luck. I was told the parts in parallel are less critical than those in series so if you are trying to get the most for your money start there.

barrysandy

Thanks for the feedback on DIRAC. Great stuff on your new crossovers, I had Duelund cap upgrades built into my PBNs and am glad I did. Keep us posted on progress!

System edited: Started building a pair of external crossovers for the Dunlavy SC-VIs. The Duelund CAST capacitors, inductors, and resitors have arrived (photo). Also bought original Solen caps and inductors so the first phase will be to make the original crossover just replacing resitors to Duelund, then change one CAP or inductor per turn to measure an listen. I will keep the two original crossovers intact. It will take a while, but I am really looking forward to it. A colleague who is also an engineer, but much more into DIY will be buinding the crossovers, and we will be measuring and listening after each step.

Hi James,

You are more than welcome to come. Let's schedule.

I find the CAPS ZUMA with Joule III much better than the MacMini/Pure Music.

I will send you a PM.

Vincente,

Great system and looking forward to listening to it one day.

How are you finding the CAPS Zuma and Mojo Audio Joule III 12V linear power supply? If you could send me a message on where you sourced this from, I would appreciate it.

Thanks

James

Hello Arthursmuck,

It is quite transparent, does not take detail away, and makes a meaningfull difference. It is much better than the TACT 2.2X I used to use several years ago.

There is a lot you can do in terms of the curves, so I have to spend more time adjusting. I will also try adjusting only a window in the lower frequencies where there is the effect of the room modes.

You can use it for the trial period anyway and hear in your system. I suggest you get good measurement equipment. I got an earthworks M30 and a roland Quad-capture to do the measurents.

vn101606

Hi, terrific system! I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on using DIRAC. Strengths, weaknesses, any other room correction you've tried?

Best,
Art

Hello VPN,

My speakers were assembled when I bougth them new and four years ago when I moeved to a new house and I hope i don't have to do it again... ;)
I have no idea of the dimensions you require. I just looked on the owner's manual and the unpacking instructions but there's no reference to it. Sorry I can't help here.

I have mine with the original bases on six Michael Tenderfeet each. The bases directly on the floor made the speakers shake a little. On the Tenderfeet they stay rock solid and they stay low wich allows the tweeter to be align with my ears on listening position.

Kind regards,

Paulo

Hello Paulo,

I am using four sets of BDR Puck, cones, Puck (all mk.IV) per speaker, locate below the four wholes (so as to close them). I have to tell you that I don't know if they sound better or worse than with the bases. I lost the metal part that connects the bases to the speakers so if you ever disassemble the bases and can let me know the dimension of the treads and length, perhaps I will try with the bases again.

Yes, 15" woofers. I have been told they are from Eminence, but I don't have the model.

vn101606

Those Dunlavy's have 15" woofers, true?

dave_72

Hello Vn101606,

Congrats on your superb setup.
I also have a pair of SC-VI and I'm using the original bases. I noticed that you aren't using them and have feet under yours.
May I ask what feet are you using?
Thank you.

Kind regards,

Paulo

Hi Vito,

I am running Lion, only because I haven't yet spent the time yet to create another partition to install Snow Leopard.

The USB-X box is running perfectly with Lion OS, however, Pure Music can not run integer mode with Lion, and can not send DSD to USB-X with Lion.

Cheers,

Vicente

vn101606

Wonderful system! I was wondering if your 2011 Mac Mini is running Snow Leopard or Lion OS. If using Lion, have you had any conflicts with the Playback Designs
USB-x box?
Thanks.

System edited: The new Krell Phantom is great. Just received it yesterday, not yet broken-in, but already substantially better than the Krell KCT and every other preamp I ever tested in my system.

System edited: Changing the Krell FPB 750mcx monos (at Krell Dealer) to 220V improved the sound (more air, more detail, more control). The NBS Black Label II 4ft spades speaker cables are a small but noticeable improvement over the NBS Omega 0. The new cables still have to go through the 50hour recommended burn in, so they may improve further.
