K&K Audio Sonus Veritas Beta 6H30
tube, transformer-coupled, differential gain stage preamp
I recently
purchase this beautiful preamp from the original owner who commissioned Kevin
Carter (owner of K&K Audio) to special build this unit starting with one of
the gain stage boards used in the ultra preamp (Sonus Vertas – Genoa). You can read the link I have attached to see
a review of the Genoa https://parttimeaudiophile.com/2013/03/07/sonus-veritas-genoa/. This review is not for the preamp I am
selling, it was the preamp from which the gain board was used in building the
preamp for sale. The unit is less than 4
years old and is in perfect condition physically and sonically. The unit runs two 6H30 tubes and there are 5
additional matched pairs that will go with the preamp, which should last a
lifetime. Please see below from the
original owner describing most of the technical aspects of the build by Kevin
Carter.
From the original owner (below):
This preamp is a
special build by Kevin Carter himself, using a beta version of the differential
gain stage board from the Genoa preamp of the Sonus Veritas line. Kevin also
added high tech Lundahl amorphous core material output transformers (LL1689AM)
which preserves the warm tone of a tube preamp while providing more
transparency with a more fleshed out soundstage. The tubes employed are a pair
of 6H30, the legendary Russian supertubes. In my audio systems I found that too
much overall system gain really limited the usable preamp volume control range,
so Kevin used low gain output transformer boards (zero dB/6dB, switchable via
the front panel). If you want higher gain, Kevin has a compatible 6 dB/12dB
output board that he will install for $50 plus shipping. I also had Kevin add a
separate volume control for each channel. They are resistor-based with Seiden
stepped controls.
