Customized Altec-Lansing Speaker

These highly-efficient speakers can be driven to room-filling
volume with just a few watts. Currently, I drive them with an 8-watt per
channel tube amplifier. The original 210A cabinets were designed for the
first "talkies" (movies with sound) when they had to fill cinemas
with even fewer watts of tube amplification. The 210A speaker from which
the speakers on sale were derived came from the Milwaukee County Stadium
prior to its demolition in 2001.

The bass units were created by removing the baffle from
the original cabinet (see cutaway drawing in the picture gallery) and splitting
the remaining horn-shaped cabinet into two parts with one driver and a new
"wall" for each one. The original 15-inch drivers were re-coned and
re-magnetized three years ago and are well broken in. The drivers have
also been rotated 180 degrees a couple of times since then. The interior
of each cabinet is loosely stuffed and closed with a removable rear baffle
(with a porting slot top and bottom) to provide access to the rear of the speaker
basket and its mounting hardware.

The high-frequency horns are from a pair of Altec Lansing
Valencia home speakers. They use have three-year old, German-built,
drivers that are more sensitive than the originals from Altec, but designed
to fit and work with Altec horn lenses. They are implemented with
custom-designed crossovers, built with high-quality parts and silver solder,
and were matched to the new drivers using professional test equipment and extended listening sessions by seasoned audiophiles. (Graphs available if required.)

For domestic use, the exterior is laminated and the
throat painted with a high-gloss paint. The high-frequency horns are
painted to match and can be enclosed in supplied cabinets that also
contain the crossover boards. See the photos for examples of the speakers
with and without these hi-frequency cabinets.

These speakers can rock as well as reproduce simple
solo voices with clarity and imaging. The original price for this listing
is a guess because the original 201As haven't been on the market for decades
and whatever original price the dollar has seen many inflations since then.
The current selling price is based primarily on the upgrades and customizations,
not just my original purchase price.
