Ayre Acoustics spectacular K-5xeMP preamp. This was purchased as a demo unit from a retailer in CT and is 5 years old. If you look at the front this unit is an MP unit from the factory and was not an older upgrade. The evolution logo shows this.
This preamp is fully balanced with 2 RCA and 2 XLR inputs. The volume has 66 steps and delivers an extremely refined and rich sound. Dead silent but full with a warmth that is characteristic of Ayre. This unit is definitely a hair to the warm side or their other preamps. This unit clearly deserved its Stereophile A rating.
At the time, the retailer (Take 5 in New Haven) did not have the original box and I am lacking it. The only flaw is a nick in the finish on the right side of the unit.
It is getting an 8 because of the age, the nick and lack of a box.
