This is the best amplifier I have ever owned. I love the warm glow of the tubes but, especially, the power and flat response to support everything I’ve thrown at it – from jazz and orchestral pieces to modern funk and electronica. The music reproduction is transparent – I’m not sure how else to describe it. Now I am moving cross-country to a smaller space and would like to downsize, as this amp weighs about 58 lbs.
My self-assessed grade of 7/10 – “Good” is probably a bit conservative but I would rather undersell than have someone be disappointed. There are two reasons I did not give this an 8/10. First, there is a hairline scratch visible on the front panel above the Rear Input switch, which I’ve captured on one of the photos. Second, there is a slight hum that comes from the unit when it is powered. I have heard this on other high-end tube amplifiers before and it has been that way on this unit from the day I received it 8 years ago. After several email and phone exchanges with Roger Gibboni himself (a fellow aerospace engineer who was very generous with his time), we concluded that it was operating to specification and that the quiet hum was normal and due to the ½-kilowatt power supply. When playing music the EHF-100 is transcendent; I mention this only in the interest of full disclosure.
The unit comes with everything it originally came with – manual, power cord, tubes, and tube shields. It is in its original (robust) packaging consisting of a box within a box with factory-tailored foam packing. Being a bit of a boy scout (be prepared), I purchased a complete set of replacement tubes for the amplifier in 2013 that go along with the unit, as follows:
Qty. 2 of T-EF806S-JJ (EF806S – JJ Electronics)
Qty 2 of T-12AX7WA-SOVT (12AX7WA – Sovtek)
Matched quad (4 tubes) of T-KT88-JJ-MQ (KT88 – Tetrode, Beam Power, JJ Electronics)
To be clear, the sale includes the original set of tubes plus the complete set of unused replacement tubes listed above. I hope someone else gets as much enjoyment from this unit as I have. Thanks!
