This is a pair of AAD Reference Silver-1 in beautiful real wood curly maple veneer and silver, all polished to a very high gloss.
AAD is famed designer Phil Jones' company. This model was reviewed very favorably by John Atkinson in Stereophile in 2007 (available online); he liked them so well he used them as monitors on one of his recording projects.
I have owned two pairs of the highly regarded $3k AAD 2001s, and overall I prefer the Silver 1s.
The drivers are a 5.5 inch kevlar honeycomb cone woofer with a very large magnet assembly, and a one inch horn loaded planar tweeter.
They are superbly clean, very detailed and coherent, and as usual for Jones' creations, have bass depth and definition out of proportion to their small size. Highs are as extended and close to perfect tonally as I've heard except for the very best ribbons. They comfortably outperformed the speakers they replaced, Ascend Sierra 1s, and are a near sonic copy of their replacements, a $2000 rosewood pair of Aurum Cantus Leisure 3s.
All in all a great small speaker, fully competitive with any standmount under $2k that I've heard.
The fly in the ointment for this pair is that while the fronts, drivers, and most surfaces are in very good condition, they received shipping damage before I owned them due to poor packing. Several corners have paint scrapes, there is a 3" scratch down one side, and a dent on one upper edge. The original grills were damaged and unusable. I made new grills from aluminum mesh that look pretty good, but of course they are not required. The fronts look great. The damaged paint was touched up with a matching silver color. They are very nice and clean looking from 4 feet or more away, but are dinged up in several spots, so I'm selling them for 25% of the new price - a great bargain for this construction and sound quality- pro monitor quality, IMO.
I really like the sound and looks of these, but as they are in a bedroom system they are victims of my wife's re-decorating drive, which now requires dark speakers. If I could find a rosewood pair of these, they would have been my first choice, but this model is pretty hard to find.
I can send additional higher rez pics showing the repaired areas upon request. Send me your email address in the request.
Thanks for stopping by, and good listening!
