For AC Power with The Lowest Noise Floor, Nothing Beats an Equi=Tech

Equi=Tech invented the Balanced Power standard in the early 90’s to eliminate ground noise, hum, and the distortion dumped back on the AC line by switching power supplies in our systems as well as computers. The technology is based on the science of Common Mode Rejection. Dirty power upstream means dirty audio and video downstream.

Every component specified in its design has been selected from years of research and testing in professional and consumer high definition A/V systems in both analog and digital formats. When it comes to AC power. nothing beats an Equi=Tech, the clear choice of professionals around the world.

As shown, Model 1R 10 Amp, 1KVA, 1000 watts of quiet, balanced power:

What is balanced power?

When 120-volt AC power is balanced, one side of the circuit has +60 Volts to ground while the other has -60 Volts to ground. (Across the circuit, the usual 120 Volts is still present. Fig. 1)  A European 230 Volt balanced power system has +115 Volts and -115 Volts to ground on the conductors.

Standard unbalanced AC power systems have a “hot” conductor and a “neutral” conductor. In the US, the “hot” conductor nominally has 120 Volts to ground and the “neutral” conductor has 0 Volts to ground. (Fig. 2) Europe has a similar system but with 230 volts on the “hot” and 0 Volts on the “neutral.”

In a balanced power system, the voltages on the system’s two output terminals are 180 degrees out of phase to each other with respect to ground. The system reference (ground) originates at the output center tap of an AC isolation transformer. In other words, the system’s grounding reference (zero position) is located at the system’s mean voltage differential or zero crossing point of the AC sinewave. This is a far more effective way to establish a reference potential for an AC system. The center tap is then grounded to Earth for electrical safety and for referencing shields.

There is never any voltage or current present on the ground reference in a balanced power system. Transient voltages and reactive currents which normally would appear on the neutral and ground wires are also out of phase and likewise, sum to zero at the ground reference thereby canceling out AC hum and noise.

A balanced AC Power system works the same way as a balanced audio (XLR) circuit but with a higher amplitude. Both balanced audio and balanced ACincorporate phase cancellation or common mode rejection to eliminate noise.

Today Balanced Power is used in almost every high-end professional recording and production facility in the USA. Let’s be frank about this. It’s not a small difference in sound or in video quality that we’re talking about here, but rather something on the order of astonishing.  Professional engineers who use balanced power routinely report an increase in dynamic range and decrease in system noise of between 16dB to 20dB. This is huge. What this means is that very subtle details that were once lost now appear in the music and in the video image that were once imperceptible. Reducing background noise enhances the clarity and resolution on both hi res audio and HD video

Mil spec oxygen free copper wire is used throughout the Model R assembly to further reduce random high frequency current distortion.  This improves an already near perfect mirror image output and further widens its range of noise attenuation.  The Model R’s switches and circuit breakers are the finest made and they’re duty rated for over 1/2 million operations.  Every component part used in the Model R has been selected because it is the best of its kind.  There is nothing that compares in quality or performance to the Model R except the Model Q.

The Model R has a simple yet elegant appearance.  It features an anodized aluminum front panel that is available in black or silver. There is one blue LED indicator light above the input power switch and one above each output standby switch indicating power status at both the input and the output. The input power LED also doubles as a TVSS status light that indicates active surge protection when lit.  In the rare event that it stops working and the output LED still works, this indicates that the surge protector has taken too many nuisance voltage spikes and its days are done.  In the rare event that this occurs, the Model R is grounded by Faraday shields to provide excellent redundant surge protection until the TVSS module can be replaced, an inexpensive and easy thing to do.

On the rear panel, there are 12 AC outlets provided (more in the larger versions.)  One GFCI outlet is independent from the front standby switch(es) and is constantly left turned on for use with components that require continuous power for a clock or to maintain volatile memory. Of the 10 remaining outlets, 6 (white) are for analog components such as amplifiers and pre amps and 4 (gray) are specially filtered outlets for digital components. A circuit breaker on the rear panel protects the system from overload and from potential short circuit fire hazards in electrical power cords and downstream connected equipment.

Model R’s are offered in 7 different sizes ranging from 1kVA to 10kVA load capacities.  Most Model R’s that are rated at 2kVA or less require a 120 Volt supply circuit to operate. (The 1RE, 2RE, and 2QE require 208/240 Volts.)  3kVA and 5kVA models require a 208 or 240 Volt supply as do the 7.5kVA and 10kVA models.  The chart below indicates the circuit size and standard plug type used to connect the Model R to the source power outlet.

Commercial / Industrial Applications:

Award winning Equi=Tech Wall Cabinet Systems are factory pre-assembled power distribution centers for hard wiring balanced AC power into a facility – a complete balanced power distribution system built into a wall cabinet.  Only minimal installation is required eliminating many expensive hours of labor and hard to find electrical parts.  All the necessary components such as transformer, breakers, GFCIs, surge protectors and line filters are factory assembled using the highest quality materials and components.

Wall systems are designed to blanket an entire facility with clean and phase coherent balanced AC power that remains stable regardless of how they are loaded down.  5, 7.5, 10, 15 and 20 kVA sizes provide 50, 75, 100, 150 or 200 amps respectively – ideal capacities for most studios and modestly sized theaters or auditoriums.  These systems utilize the same precision toroid isolation transformers as Equi=Tech rack systems but they are much larger with a greater capacity.  Wall systems are the easiest way to provide clean power for a larger facility, doing so with the assurance that the system will remain quiet regardless of what equipment is used or added to it at any time

    STEPHEN WINFREY, July 2010 – September 27, 2017

Sound conditioning is a must in this day and age to get the optimum performance in any system. I received my Equitech 1.5Q not even a week ago and the effect is nothing short of stunning. I have a low power tube system with high effiency speakers and the Equi=Tech improved timbre of the instruments, width and depth of the sound stage, and blackness of the background dramatically.

What else is there? If you are into musicality and are thinking about changing your amplifiers or some other component in your system do yourself a favor and get one of these first. What you don’t spend changing out in your system may actually save you money in the end. STEPHEN WINFREY, July 2010

    CHES MEIERDING, June 2007 – September 27, 2017

I recently purchased an Equi=Tech Model 2Q conditioner, replacing a Richard Gray 400S. I used the 400S on my front end components. It didn’t however work well with the amp plugged into it. The Richard Gray is a nice unit and has served me well over the last several years. However, it does not play in the same league as the Equi=Tech. CHES MEIERDING, June 2007

    Larry Kiraly, Aug 2011 – September 27, 2017

I probably would have never totally believed it if I had not heard it in my own home on my personal stereo components. To be blunt and to the point, my stereo system sounded good, however, after I integrated the Equi=Tech 2Q power balancer into my components, the entire system sounded like it got an injection of steroids at the highest dose possible! I am one very satisfied customer!

The first few days that I used the model 2Q, I listened to a dozen of my audiophile recordings that I always use for the purpose of demonstration and comparison. I immediately noticed the lower noise floor, wider and greater depth and definition of sound stage, increased resolution including more detail, better vocal and instrumental harmony, and bigger deeper bass resolution. DEXTER M. PRICE, March 2004 – September 27, 2017

The Equi=Tech Model Q. I have the original model (30 months old), but this high definition iteration blew it away. This black box had a profound impact on the sound of my audio system. The “noise floor” dropped to the sub-basement! The bass was tighter and more extended and crisp. I could hear much more information across the music spectrum.

The overall musical presentation was much closer to a “live” sonic performance than I experienced with the older unit. The sonic presentation drew me into the music. This improvement was across the board (turntable, CD, CD-RW, and tuner). This unit took my audio system to another level of musical enjoyment. DEXTER M. PRICE, March 2004

    DEAN CARL JOHNSON, Feb 2006 – September 27, 2017

How about I cut to the chase? EQUI=TECH RULES!!!!!! I am just ecstatic over the performance of the 2Q Line Balancer your technicians recently built for me. It is by far the best AC product I have ever owned. It is truly a reference piece. I have never heard my high-end audio system produce such pure, clear and lifelike sounds before I started powering all the components with the Equi=Tech Model 2Q

I am just amazed at the incredible improvement in the noise floor, bass extension and definition, sound stage placement and overall sense of ease in the delivery of the recording. My amplifiers are 18 watts class A single-ended going into the 91db efficient speakers and I no longer hear them even hint at clipping as they did before the 2Q was installed. DEAN ROSSI, Sept 2013 – September 27, 2017

Now was the true test. I put on a CD that I’ve used for sonic clarity and imagery for years and what I heard BLEW ME AWAY. I could NOT believe my ears!! Thinking I was imagining things, I quickly jumped up and put on another trusted CD and it too was nothing short of amazing. The details in the imaging and depth of the recording were vastly improved.

Also, I noticed the low end was MUCH tighter and controlled. These recordings sounded as though Id heard them for the first time.
So hats off to everyone there at Equitech for producing such a truly fine piece of equipment. One that is a ‘must have’ for any serious audiophile and one that I will cherish for a lifetime. DEAN ROSSI, Sept 2013

    Danny Kaye, Positive Feedback, June/July 2003 – September 27, 2017

“I could immediately hear a noticeable improvement! Like a little kid in a candy store, I grasped for words to describe this newfound level of bliss. Imaging, resolution, dynamics were all taken to new levels. I never thought that such a product would have such a profound impact! Going through my fab-five collection of bass demo CDs, I couldn’t help but notice that the bass was tighter, more controlled, and more forceful. Likewise, the air on top opened up more—not like, say, turning up the treble a notch or two, but a natural extension of what was already there. The midrange was improved as well, with a greater sense of that “being there” feeling. Dean Martin took on life. It may be because the electrical system in my house is ancient, but I noticed an immense difference with the Equi=Tech unit plugged into the chain.

This is one of those rare components that really works like magic. If you decide to purchase this fine piece of equipment, I can safely say that what you will hear is indeed what their promotional material describes. Danny Kaye, Positive Feedback, June/July 2003

    Tim Hart, AVRev.com, Jan 2005 – September 27, 2017

The Equi=Tech jumps to the elite level of AC power components with the Q series of balanced power products. Using the straightforward design approach of Common Mode Rejection, the 2Q produces a lower noise floor, which improves dynamic range and offers better resolution with improved midrange with very little bloom and without sacrifice to the music.
The 2Q put a tighter hold on low-frequency information, too. Bass had a noticeably tighter snap to the leading edge transients on kick drum and more body in a bass guitar note. For video, black levels, contrast and color saturation took on new dimensions. Color separation and darker information gained more focus and clarity.

The 2Q never ran out of gas when I pushed my system hard, which is amazing to me. Typically, you would trip the breaker in my house if you were running as many power-hungry components as are in my system. The low inrush current prevented any tripped breakers during start-up. If that is not enough, you get 10 outlets with surge suppression, high quality parts and superior build quality. Tim Hart, AVRev.com, Jan 2005
