Audio Research SP3A-1 Near flawless.

The Legendary ARC SP3a-1 preamp should need no introduction here so I will spare you with the hype. Those privy to the beautiful voice of the SP3a will surely attest to it's pedigree.

The SP3a-1 offered here was purchased new from the Audio Emporium in Buffalo New York in 1975 and has remained in my family since.
Returned to the factory in 1979 and updated to a 3a-1. Verification stamped in the chassis [see photo]

In the mid 90's......Leonard at ARC recommended updating the power supply . The preamp was sent to ARC and the 6 filter caps in the supply were replaced with original parts, recalibrated and retubed. The new muting circuit revision was highly recommended and installed as well.

In 2005 the unit was sent to Great Northern Sound where Steve Huntley [Former ARC Techie] replaced a few drifting resistors and removed the quirky contour switch and accompanying circuitry and installed a fresh compliment of new tubes.

The preamp's signal path is factory "bone stock" original right down to the original coupling caps of the 3a-1 revision.
Phono stage recently retubed with new production Gold Lion 12ax7's.
Playing in song and dead quiet in operation.

Cosmetically speaking: This preamp is near flawless and in showroom condition. I doubt very seriously one could find another in better condition. I will rate it a conservative 8 here just to be safe.
