The K-1xe was Ayre’s flagship preamp until it was replaced by the considerably more expensive KX-R. The K-1xe combines transparency with musicality. The K-1xe’s fully-balanced, zero-feedback FET circuitry allow musical passages to emerge with startling dynamics from a silent background. Its volume control uses solid-silver contacts in a innovative configuration to eliminate all wiring for superb sound.
The internal preamp consist of two mono phono boards. Each channel has adjustable gain (40-60dB gain) and impedance (100 ohm to 50,000 ohm). I have a full set of resistors to make the adjustments. The internal phono stage is comparable to the P-5xe, and is a $1,600 option.
