Up for auction you are viewing a very rare and hard to fine (Gold Promo) Bach/Starker Mercury Living Presence Sound, three LP’s, labels with black lettering in the gold label promos, booklet included, vinyl in NM condition, super clean and ultra glossy. The vinyl looks un-played in a box set stamped promotional copy not for sale. These recordings of the six cello suites were recorded just before Christmas, 1965 in New York City at Fine Recording’s studio A. Unless you have attended a recording session, it is difficult to appreciate the rather terrifying loneliness that surround an artist in a project of this sort-alone cellist facing the microphones with only his cello and Bach for company. Mr. Starker has studied and performed Bach’s Suites since boyhood. Because of the lack of a definitive manuscript giving all of Bach’s specific performing instructions, every cellist must in a sense be his own stylistic editor, and on this subject Mr. Starker makes his position quite clear. Pablo Casals, who is almost solely responsible for introducing these suites to the concert public of our century. Any attempt to classify a performance of this music is baseless. The equipment of the contemporaneous cello is quite different from that of those used in Bach’s time. Also additional mysteries surround these Suites due to the fact that the original manuscript has been lost and most modern editions have been based on two facsimiles, one copied by Bach’s second wife, Anna Magdalena and the other by his pupil, Kellner. As the organist Widor said: ‘What speaks through Bach’s music is pure and religious emotion, and this is one and the same in all men in spite of national and religious differences. It is the emotion of the infinite and the exalted for which words are always inadequate only in art . . . We are made one by what we admire in common and comprehend in common.’ There is not much to say about these performances that hasn’t been said many times before. They are excellent, no, outstanding performances and offer exceptionally fine Mercury Presence Sound. You will not believe what your ears will tell you when you hear these fabulous recordings. You will hear a cello as if you were sitting five feet from Mr. Starker. You hear everything. His bow strokes, his fingering technique, everything, in glorious sound. In joining Indiana University in 1958 and beginning his solo performing career in earnest. He continued until shortly before his death. Janos Starker died April 28, 2013 at a hospice in Bloomington, Ind. He was 88.”Except for a man’s limited time and capacity, one hopes it never ends. . . Bach’s creations will remain as long as human aspirations center on art and music.” Janos Starker. Vinyl Condition: All six sides in NM condition.
