My favorite speaker made to sound the best they can with upgraded first class crossover parts. No change was made in Robert Lee's design. I maintained all the same value capacitors and resistors and upgraded the parts quality with outstanding results. All parts matched within 1%. Inductors were not touched as they are very high quality types. Robert's design is brilliant with the cabinet work and driver quality all top notch. The crossover parts were the only area that could be improved and this would have been cost prohibitive for the builder. Before the upgrade this speaker is well known as a very special transducer and highly reviewed. Post upgrade these are outrageously good.
All the lesser quality sand cast resistors were replaced with first class Duelund CAST, Duelund regular, and Mills MRA12 resistors. I had to replace a sea of these lower quality resistors as the pictures show. Lower quality poly caps were replaced with the outstanding Jupiter HT and VT line of premium capacitors. These are very expensive parts that sound so wonderful in this speaker. I am an avid DIY guy building amps, tube amps, upgrading speaker crossovers and gear etc... I did the work on these speakers and it was a near 10 day labor of love. See my feedback under my username grannyring.
These speakers sell for $9-$10 grand used without these upgrades. I purchased all the parts at very steep discounts for just under $1000 and the upgrade took me many long days as it required a great deal of effort to do it right. To buy the parts right now would cost you some $1500.
I used good quality terminal strips to raise many of the resistors off the board to help in heat dissipation and vibration control. Jupiter stranded copper wire in cotton and well as Duelund 16ga stranded copper wire in cotton was used in the crossover as well as Cardas solder. No detail was overlooked!
The only reason I am selling is to upgrade another set just like this set, but with outboard crossovers.
Please view the links to see the before and after work done with the crossovers.
I don't want to ship and would much rather have a local pick up. I live in the Nashville TN area. This also gives a potential buyer the opportunity to both hear and see the speakers first hand. I may consider shipping or meeting a buyer half way if the drive is not more than 90 minutes. I do have the original boxes and grills for the lower and upper sections. Here are pictures of the crossover work;

You can also read all about the upgrade and how it unfolded here on Audiogon;

These are the MKI version and with all the crossover upgrades it easily outperforms the MKII. Easily!
