Definitive Technology Mythos ST Mechanically 100% / Some Cosmetic Issues

Please Note: These are functionally 100% and look great from most angles and, I think, a great deal at my asking price. However, they do have some cosmetic issues that I touched up when I got them. If you're looking for something that falls into the strong 8/10 category I'll probably be listing a pair like that soon for about $400 more. 

I've had a number of the ST and STS pass through my house over the years both for personal use and to sell. This particular pair was purchased as "open box" from a local authorized retailer about a year ago and have been in use as rear surrounds in my big system since purchase. As rear surrounds and crossed over at 40hz  so these have never been pushed hard and have been on voltage regulated power the entire time I've owned them. These are mechanically 100%.

These were doing quite nicely in that role but I like trying different gear and when I had the chace to get a deal on some cosmetically challenged JM Lab Electras that I liked enough after the work I did on them they got rotated in to my bedroom and big room. So my wandering eyes (when it comes to gear) creates this oppurtinity for someone willing to make the drive to Charlottesville, VA to purchase a fine sounding set of Definitive towers.

I'm not going to ship these. I've sold a number of these and the STS over the years and even the smaller STS are a fairly serious PITA to ship without the factory boxes ... and I don't have the boxes or any big enough for these. Since it's a local sale I'll be happy to hook them up for a full demo before finalizing the deal. I also have a nice E112 JL sub for sale here that would make a great cosmetic and acoustic match if you'd like to check it out while here.

Cosmetics
Like the STS I also have for sale these have a couple of issues. One is a solid 8/10 but the other had an abrasion at the top towards the back of the speaker and a couple of smallish dings. I touched them up with and the present very nicely as a pair but they aren't perfect.
Please check the pictures just recently taken. I try to take enough pictures to give  a potential buyer enough info to determine how they'll look for their planned use.

ST vs. STS
Whenever I've sold these in the past I've been asked the about the differences between these and their smaller brothers. I've never done actual A/B comparisons but have spent a lot of time with both. 

To my ear the highs and mids are pretty much the same with the big difference being the low frequencies. Definitive is a great company that makes a fine product (and has maybe the best customer service in the business) but the low frequency claims for many of their products are, to put it kindly, exaggerated. While neither version of the Supertowers will come close to producing useful output at anything close to the sub 20hz figures they publish the bigger ST version do dig deeper and, to my ear, the bass is a little tighter and more controlled.

And that really just comes down to the size of the speaker. The ST are substantially larger which makes it a lot easier to get bigger bass from them. If you plan to always use them with a sub and crossed over at 40ish hz you probably are fine with the STS but if you plan to run them full range for music (or possibly all of the time) you will absolutely notice the difference in the bottom end.
