Audiophile: 20 Killer Classical LP Gems, TAS, Decca, London, RCA, Archive, Angel…Great Sound, Crisp, Clean Copies!

Folks, there are a number of “Heavy Hitters” in this group, including several TAS Superdisc Titles. Everything is of Audiophile Quality Sound, and these are in Like-New, Crisp, Clean condition! Just look how clean and crisp the spines are! These handsome copies will look good on your record shelf, too. There are 15 titles and 20 LPs.

Some of the highlights:

—Brahms “Piano Concerto #1”, with Clifford Curzon (Piano), and George Szell cond. the London Symphony Orchestra in what is truly one of the all-time great performances. Recorded by Decca in 1962, the sound is STUNNING, with a large, rich, atmospheric sound stage. This is the Decca Jubilee edition, is in Like-New condition, and includes a color Jubilee catalog with pictures of the different releases in this series worth drooling over. A must have!

—Three Mahler Box Sets (Syms. #5, #6, #7), with Sir Georg Solti and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra; the are truly STUNNING recording by Kenneth Wilkinson, Decca’s premier engineer. #8 made in onto the TAS Superdisc List; these recordings were made by the same recording engineer! These are crisp, clean copies, too. 3 Box Sets, 6 LPs.

—Bax “Symohony #3; The Happy Forest”, with Edward Downes and the London Symphony. Recorded by Decca for RCA, this is the Only Analog Stereo version ever issued on vinyl. Stunning sound, of course. This was only issued in the UK, and this is the early pressing that was cut and pressed by Decca. A clean, crisp copy!

—Britten “A Ceremony of Carols; Missa Breva”, with Asian Ellis (Harp), and David Willcocks cond. the King’s College Choir. This is one of two of my all-time favorite versions of this totally enchanting and sometimes mysterious work. The EMI recording is Outstanding. A clean, crisp, Like-New copy! Though we’re several months away from Christmas, it’s never to soon to pick up a classic like this.

—George Crumb “Music for a Summer Evening (for Two Amplified Pianos and Percussion)”. Title tells all; this was recorded by the same engineers who did the “Ancient Voices of Children” which was a TAS Superdisc title. A clean, crisp copy of a fairly rare release.

—Rachmaninov “Corelli Variations; Etudes Tableaux”, with Vladimir Ashkenazy (Piano). My favorite piano recordings are by Decca (London), and Ashkenazy is blessed by a beautiful, rich sound. A clean, crisp copy!

—Vaughan Williams “Symphony #3; Tuba Concerto”, with John Fletcher (Tuba), and Andre Previn cond. the London Symphony. This is probably my favorite reading of the Symphony, and the Tuba Concerto (which is rare), is full of the jolliness you would expect, but is also surprisingly moving and lyrical, too. Recorded in the Walthamstow Town Hall by Kenneth Wilkinson, Decca’s top engineer, the sound is jaw-dropping. A rich, full, dynamic, atmospheric recording. This is a Like-New copy!

—Gidon Kremer: Violin Music of Milhaud, Chausson, Vieuxtemps. A very rare release, this is one of Kremer’s earlier issues from 1980, in the years before heading some amazing ensemble groups. Beautiful, rich, atmospheric Philips recording, with Riccardo Chailly cond. the London Symphony Orchestra, this is a clean, crisp copy.

—Dvorak “Symphony #8”, with George Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra. I think #8 is probably my favorite, and I’m a big fan of Szell, too. This was his very last recording (and a fine one at that). This is a Like-New copy, and comes in a handsome textured jacket, as well as a textured insert with essays and pictures about Szell.

And the stuff I didn’t write about is just as wonderful, and there are going to be many amazing moments as you explore; these are solid titles with world-class sound covering a variety of styles and periods; everything here received 3 stars in The Penguin Stereo Record Guide, along with TAS Superdisc Status.

I have photographed the spines to give you a very clear idea of what’s here.
