3.0 set of Snell Acoustics LCR 500 and HCC 500, THX Certified Home Theater Speakers

    This listing is for a full set of three Snell Acoustics LCR 500 home cinema speakers. These speakers sold new in a 5.2 system for $6000. The previous owner bought these when he was building his top of the line home theater. He spent more than $60,000 to complete his theater in the mid 1990's (adjusted for inflation that would be over $94,000 today). These Snell were the first consumer speakers to be THX certified, and they remain some of the best speakers available for home theater.

    THX is a company founded by George Lucas. When he came to realize that his movies were being played at theaters with poor audio quality, he decided to do something about it. He released THX certification for commercial cinemas the same year he released "Return of the Jedi". After that, THX grew to become the movie standard around the world, and THX certification held a lot of weight. THX-certified surround sound systems had to be capable of sustaining 85 dB over the entire movie, as well as being capable of hitting peaks of up to 105 dB, all while maintaining very low distortion. The speakers also need to be able to disperse sound very precisely.

    The THX certification that these speakers bear tells you that the Snell LCR 500 and matching HCC 500 are capable of all of this. The LCR 500 and HCC 500 are a 2-Way design with two 6.5" woofers and two tweeters. The dual woofer design allows these speakers to handle the bottom of the audio range without any distortion. The dual woofer design also adds to maximum output capabilities of these speakers. The tweeters are lined up very specifically so that you will have perfect sound dispersion when listening. The HCC 500 is identical to the LCR 500, other than the fact that the tweeters are rotated. It is extremely important to have the tweeters stacked horizontally in order to achieve proper sound reproduction. The tweeters are distanced very precisely so that you do not have sound wave cancellation. Also, these speakers all have the original felt absorption panels surrounding the tweeters to absorb the sound waves that otherwise would refract off of the front baffle of the speakers. The tweeters also have an adjustable potentiometer on the rear so you can adjust the high frequency level to complement your listening environment acoustic properties. In addition to this, there is a 2A 250v fuse to protect the tweeters from any damage. The cabinets are rock solid, weighing in at 25lbs per speaker. There is no question about the quality construction of these speakers. All of this engineering went into these speakers to ensure that they project sound according to George Lucas' original THX standards.

   These particular speakers are in excellent condition. All of them include the grills, none of which have any tears. The tweeters and woofers all work perfectly. It is important to note that many Snell speakers of this series have woofers that have sustained cone separation from the butyl rubber surrounds over the years. A shop has repaired the woofers on all of these speakers and they work flawlessly once again. The cabinets all have an authentic wood veneer which is in excellent condition. As previously mentioned, the felt tweeter absorption panels are all perfectly intact and are very clean. The potentiometers for the tweeters have all been recently cleaned with Deoxit and the 2 amp, 250 volt fuses for the tweeters are all in perfect condition, having never been blown. There are two listening modes for these speakers, which is the reason for the four gold-plated binding posts on the rear. One pair is to be used for "Normal Operation" and one pair for "Compensated" operation. The Compensated operation allows you to compensate for something such as placing these speakers behind an acoustically transparent screen or directly against your wall.

    These speakers are excellent home theater speakers and I would keep them if I did not have my self made DIY speakers with 15" woofers. My upgrade means you can get these speakers for an incredible price. You cannot find any pair of speakers on the new market today which can compare to these at this price. These offer incredible clarity and dynamics that simply leave you smiling.
