Excellent Condition 

The Sony HD AM/FM Radio Tuner XDR-F1HD is widely considered
among audiophiles to be one of the best stand alone HD radio tuners
available.  Please note that the Tuner
must be attached to a powered amplifier or powered speakers in order to obtain
sound.

This Sony HD Tuner was purchased in used, but upgraded and
modified condition, by me in December of 2014 at a cost of $480 by xdrguy.

About the Seller:

I am relatively new to Audiogon.  I have been a member of eBay since 1998.  I have a 100% feedback rating with over 1,000
transactions as a buyer and seller.  My
eBay name is "suburb-guy."  If
you review my individual feedback history on eBay, you will see that I have
sold numerous audio-related items.

Condition of Item:

The refurbished device has less than 300 hours of use.  After I purchased the Sony HD tuner, I then
purchased a home theater receiver with built-in HD radio, and consequently, I
removed this device from daily use and placed it in a temperature controlled
storage unit.

The tuner and remote are in excellent condition with only
a few small marks.        

Upgrades and
Modifications:

The upgraded and modified Sony tuner significantly exceed
Sony's original design specifications and the original, projected longevity of
the device.  The upgraded and modified
tuner was tested and burned in prior to being resold to me.        

Here is why you want a Sony XDR-F1 HD that has been
aligned and modified: 

The factory FM
alignment is usually a little off on the original unit. 

The FM section
of this modified XDR has been aligned for best sensitivity to weak stations.

The factory audio board on the original unit is not
great. 

A new audio board has been installed that delivers the
following performance improvements and features.

*Much flatter frequency response, within +0 db I -0.2 dB
from 20Hz to 30 KHz

*20db S/N Ratio Improvement

*Distortion is reduced by approximately 50%

*Low pass filter design eliminates ultrasonic noise

*Audio headroom nearly doubled so no chance of clipping
on "hot" HD stations

*Improved "phase coherency" (reduced phase
shift)

*Uses the ultra-premium Linear Technology LT1632 op amp
and Nichicon MUSE coupling capacitors

*Resistors and capacitors are hand-selected for matching
left and right performance. 

*Silver-bearing solder used on all connections

*No jacks or sockets

The original
version of the Sony Tuner runs hot, and this situation is really bad for
electronics. 

A 10 degree Celsius reduction in internal temperature
doubles the life expectancy of some of the tuner’s components.

To help extend the tuner’s service life, 2 ultra-quiet Noctua
NF-A4x10 cooling fans were installed.  Measurements
confirm a 20 degree Celsius reduction in the tuner's internal operating
temperature, quadrupling the predicted life of those components.

The cooling fans automatically shut off when the tuner is
off.

The original
version of the Sony Tuner had no backup power for the station presets (20 FM +
20 AM) or clock time.

A Panasonic 1.5 Farad "super capacitor" was
installed to retain the presets and clock for several hours when power is
lost. 

The LCD backlight on
the original version of the Sony Tuner was always on.

If the tuner is plugged in on the original unit, the blue
back light display is always on.   

On the modified unit, the backlight shuts off when the
tuner is off.  When the tuner is on, the
backlight works as usual, including high, medium, and low brightness settings.

There is no way
to disable HD mode on the original version. 

A switch was installed that permits the selection of “Normal
(HD)" or "Forced Analog" mode. A Blue LED reflects under the front panel as a visual cue that the tuner
is running in FA mode operation.

 The power supply
on the original version is not great. 

The standard-life electrolytic capacitors have been
replaced with new Nichicon Extended Life HE &PM Series capacitors. The new
caps are double the values of the originals, reducing DC ripple by 50%.  The 10.5V side of the power supply has been
converted from half-wave rectified to full-wave, further reducing ripple.

The original line
out jacks on the original version were not great. 

The line out jacks have been upgraded from original
nickel-plated jacks to premium quality gold-plated jacks.
