The Viva FONO moving-coil phono stage is rightly considered among the very best available. As Harry Pearson (The Absolute Sound) wrote: “It has, overall, less of its own character or coloration than any of its competitors that I have tested."    

The LITTLE FONO was an attempt by Viva to replicate, as closely as possible, the gorgeous sound of the FONO but at a much lower cost. To achieve that cost/performance target, Viva utilized similar circuit topology and specialized transformers, but with a small solid-state supply instead of the more expensive 2A3 tube-based supply of the FONO. The result was a phono stage that comes astonishingly close to the performance of the FONO at a fraction of the cost.

Having released a small production run of the LITTLE FONO at a bargain retail price of $7,000-, Viva quickly realized that they had underestimated their production costs and would have to raise the retail price to well over $10,000-. With the FONO selling at $16,000- at the time, it was decided that the LITTLE FONO could not be a commercially viable product for Viva.    

This LITTLE FONO is the last one we have available. We believe it to be an extraordinary example of rational and cost-effective design that will bring joy to any vinyl-lover. The super-low asking price reflects the unfortunate fact that it was never widely distributed and therefore never reviewed. The LITTLE FONO features short signal paths and top class materials. Dynamics are first class with beautifully layered imaging and stunning transparency. It is stunning to look at and unlike many of its competitors has the sound to match its physical beauty. At both micro- and macro-levels, dynamic shadings and headroom seem limitless. The deep and resolved bass performance is complemented by Viva’s famous mid-range transparency and a palpable sense of openness and lack of compression in the upper frequencies. The main chassis is solid aluminum for best magnetic neutrality and resonance control.
