Pioneer PL-514 Turntable Figured Birdseye Maple Price Drop

Refurbished Pioneer PL-514. 



The plinth has been recovered in real wood Figured Birdseye Maple, including a hand-rubbed
oil base coat and multiple coats of lacquer. 
Every four coats of lacquer were hand-sanded to flatten out grain
imperfections, then reapplied.  Final
coat was allowed to fully cure, then sanded up to 3000 grit, then buffed and
polished to a mirror finish.  This is not
your typical “I put some veneer on it and wiped some danish oil on it” job.  Must see in person to completely appreciate.  The depth of shine and sheen are amazing.  And no Howards products have ever touched
this table…and hope they never will.



Turntable has a new belt installed, a polished platter, polished tonearm
assembly, and feet in perfect condition. 
Unwanted resonances have been minimized by removal of the resonance
chamber (cheap cover plate removed) and an updated cork-rubber mat at the
appropriate thickness (4.5mm) to assure perfect tracking height.  The original dust cover is included and has
been sanded and polished.  It is not
perfect as it has a few scuffs and scratches, but they are very hard to
see.  From a few feet away it looks like
it is new.  Also included is the original
Pioneer Head Shell.  No cartridge is included.  



Bottom line, this is a fantastic looking turntable that looks as good as it
sounds.  The PL-514 punches way above its
weight class and is one of the hidden gems in their lineup.  A definite conversation piece and a star of
your audio rig.



The bad.   The tonearm clasp is
broken.  Feel free to order a new one, I
didn’t notice until it was put back together.  
There are some very small cracks around the hinges as seen in the
photos.

DESCRIPTION: 



The Pioneer PL-514 is a high-performance belt-driven turntable
which employs an auto-return mechanism. 



Other features include an anti-skating force control, cueing device, detachable
dust cover, insulator feet, plug-in type headshell and a 40mm thick particle
board cabinet.The Pioneer PL-514 is a 2-speed (33 and 45) turntable fitted with
a static balance type, S-shaped tonearm. 



Although the PL-514 is technically a manual, single-play turntable, the kind
traditionally preferred by audiophiles and professionals alike, it offers two
welcome conveniences. 



One is the Quick-Start function. The other is the Auto-Return function, which
works like this: when the stylus enters the lead-out groove of your record, a
special Pioneer-developed device detects the increased lateral speed of the
tone arm and triggers the auto-return mechanism. This lifts the tone arm gently,
returns it to its rest, and shuts off all power to the turntable. The mechanism
is one that Pioneer has tested successfully for over 100,000 continuous
operations, and one guaranteed to perform with minimum noise and maximum
reliability.



The PL-514's platter does not begin to rotate until you lift the tone arm and
move it toward the outer edge of the platter. This convenience is appreciated
all the more when you use it in combination with the oil-damped Cue Lever which
lets you lower the stylus to the record surface (at the point of your choice)
without risk of dropping the arm or nicking the record. 



All controls on the Pioneer PL-514 are grouped on the right hand side of the
platter to make handling easier still. In addition to the adjustment controls
for the tone arm there is the Cue Lever, the Speed Select Button.
