Hello. I am an electronics technician by trade and work on audio gear which is one of my hobbies and passions. I completely refurbished this unit with new Nichicon FG (Fine Gold) and ES series bi-polar (little green ones) audio grade capacitors. The stock op-amps were upgraded with the National Semiconductor LM4562 high performance HiFi chips that sound tremendous compared to the stock ones (which are included). The unit has been thoroughly cleaned inside and out. Both the volume and balance pots were disassembled and cleaned along with the mode switches. All connections have been cleaned with contact cleaner. It sounds better than new with the upgraded components. This unit is ready for another 25+ years of service.
The external power transformer was missing. I was able to find a schematic online and was able to re-create it with exact same voltage transformers. I used the Hammond brand as they are used by many audio manufactures. Again, better than stock parts.
Honestly, it sounds amazing. I have been in the audio hobby for 40 years and this is one of the nicest sounding preamps I have owned. I currently have a different one in my system and it’s not going anywhere anytime soon. The MM/MC phono stage sounds incredible, too.
I can describe the sound as very rhythmic. Snare drums have a real presence to them or any percussion for that matter. Highs shimmer but are never bright. Bass is deep and controlled. I would compare it to a Naim preamp I once had some time ago. It’s very easy to listen to for many hours. I now know why the older B&K stuff has such a cult following.
The overall condition is good. Some light scratches on the top cover. The top edge of the faceplate has a few small dings also. Let me know if you have any questions.
