REDUCED HOLIDAY PRICE - THIS WEEK ONLY! (Was $2600.00. Now $2300.00!)

Hello, I am selling my much-loved ModWright PH 9.0 Tube Phono stage due to some unforeseen financial obligations. It was only used for a little over three months since my turntable was in the shop until the beginning of August and I packed up the ModWright mid-November and waited to list until now as I assumed Audiogon would be offering a listing discount for Black Friday/Cyber Monday (and I was right!). Basically, the thing is brand new. I hate to let it go, but…I need the money. So, my loss is your gain.

The PH 9.0 presents a smooth and effortless presentation with amazing decay and shimmer and it is amazingly quiet for a tube preamp. It features about 90% of what ModWright’s top-of-the-line PH 150 ($7900) does at a fraction of the price ($2900).

I also upgraded the tubes with a matched pair of NOS original AMPEREX 6DJ8s which I purchased from Andy at Vintage Tube Services, so you know they are the real deal (and a $300 value)! The ModWright warranty isn’t transferable, unfortunately, but…the thing is built like a tank and I doubt you will experience any issues down the line. The fact that the warranty was for five years should tell you that ModWright stands by their product and they don’t expect any problems either. In any case, this phono stage and the included power supply was my favorite out of all the past stages I have owned and also out of about five others I auditioned before finally purchasing the ModWright. It is truly worthy and hands-down better than the rest of the sub $3000 pack I tried! Other than the detailed sound across the entire spectrum and how quiet it is, some other cool things about it are the option to adjust the gain and change the impedance on-the-fly, and there is even a mono switch (which is located on the back of the unit. It would have been nice to have it on the front, but…having it at all is a bonus any way you slice it!).

I am asking $2600 for what is essentially a new (and upgraded) phono stage. The actual list price is $2900 before taxes and the tubes upgrade is $300, so you’re getting a sweet deal on: a $3200+ pre, power supply, NOS Amperex tubes (along with the original 6DJ8 tubes that ModWright provided) and a pair of Sovtek 6C45s (installed) for the first gain stage.

Ships in original box with manual and great custom allen wrench tool for easy internal access. 6DJ8s will be shipped in their boxes and need to be installed before operation. This is to prevent any damage to the tubes (as stated in the manual. Straightforward instructions are provided, and it is easy to do/roll tubes). The Sovteks remain installed during shipping (as was the case when shipped from ModWright to me).

Anyway, check out the information from ModWright below. This is a GREAT phono stage, but don’t just take my word for it, read some reviews (links also provided below).

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. Hopefully, I can find a good home for the ModWright and someone will get to enjoy it as much as I have!

From the manufacturer:

We are excited to present the new PH 9.0 Tube Phono stage with on-the-fly loading and attenuation controls. Following in the footsteps and true Design DNA of the Reference PH 150, the PH 9.0 offers most of the same performance and flexibility of the PH 150 at a much lower price and smaller form factor.

The rise of interest in vinyl has led to demand for flexible, high performance phono stages to make the most of ALL of our vinyl. The PH 9.0 is quiet, musical, physically compact and flexible enough to suit the simplest to the most complex analog rigs!

We chose Lundahl MC step-up transformers, separate MM and MC inputs, compact external power supply on a long umbilical and vacuum tube design to maximize flexibility. The use of external supply, careful grounding, layout and solid engineering result in an extremely quiet tube phono stage!

The power supply is small and has no controls and may be tucked out of the way anywhere. The phono stage itself is 10“Wx10“Wx4“H. Its compact form factor allows flexible placement.

Like the PH 150, front panel controls for MM, Mute, MC input select, On-The-Fly MC loading and gain adjustment for MM and MC carts allows for easy adjustment to suit different cartridges and systems. Mono/Stereo toggles is located on the rear panel.

Fully balanced, transformer coupled XLR outputs are available as an add cost option. The base unit has single ended RCA outputs only.

User Review:

“Modwright has pulled the proverbial rabbit out the hat with this one. It looks great. It sounds even better. It is easy to set-up. It virtually encourages trying different settings by virtue of its accessible switches and dials. Best of all, though, they have brought out a unit with most of the circuitry and goodness of their $7,950 statement piece and rolled it out for under $2,900.”
