I am selling my pair of Emerald Physics 2.8 loudspeakers. These were the very top of a pretty extensive line of "open baffle" (boxless) speakers that create a more open, room filling sound because it forgoes the box that encases the drivers. If you are unfamiliar this this kind of technology, you could do some reading online. Magnepan and others use this approach by using membranes stretched over a large area. I had the Magnepan 3.6's, and they were wonderful. Emerald Physics does a similar thing, but with dynamic drivers instead of a membrane. I liked Emerald Physics better, as they had more fullness and presence, especially in the upper bass region. They could play a rock group or symphony orchestra more convincingly because they pushed more air into the room.
Each speaker consists of two 15"carbon fiber woofers, a 12" carbon fiber midrange, and concentrically mounted neo-polyester tweeter (meaning, the tweeter is in the throat of the midrange driver).
I have built "braces" that hold the upright portion to the part that touches the floor more firmly. It not only holds the speaker more steady, but also reduces the load on the bolts that hold the upright portion to the plinth, much the way many aftermarket Magnepan stands function. The speaker was designed to use some kind of EQ to get the full range. I have, and will include, the Emerald Physics Bass Optimization Module (BOM), though DSP (like a DSpeaker anti-mode) works great, too. I have the original boxes, and manuals.
The speakers are very efficient (97db), but need an amp that can handle low impedances. I used a 60 watt Class A tube amp with great success, and have also used 300 watt per channel solid state amps that grabbed the bass drivers even more firmly.
If you are interested and not sure you have the right amp, would also sell the great sounding Emerald Physics 600.2SE hybrid amplifier. These speakers love this amp! It is both powerful and slightly warm sounding. It is a hybrid amp - tube input with a solid state (Class D) output. The tube input can be turned on or off. This has less than 50 hours on it (it is a new amp as of this year), and I would sell it (only in combination with the speakers) for $1500. That would equal $5000 for an excellent amp/speaker combination. The speakers alone sold for $9,500 when new.
Please write with any questions. This is for pick up only, but I would be willing to do some driving to meet someone from, say, New York or Maine.
