The Esoteric N-01XD is one of the best Dacs in the world, there are only a handful of DACs can even compare. But that’s not all, it’s also a network player and upscaler with a variety of connectivities. I waited MONTHS to get this in. This is Esoterics first off-the-shelf chip Master Discreet DAC. It’s currently the best DAC that I’d ever heard - it replaced my Chord DAVE + M Scaler + Innuos Zenith + digital cables ($4000). It also trounced one of my colleagues Innuos Statement and MSB Discreet DAC. It does DSD, MQA and Roon ready! It will play with various apps such as Audirvana (which is superior in sq to Roon) and Lumin App etc. 

Simplicity is key to greatness – The simple Network player/Upscaler/Master Discreet DAC in one box means you only need one great power cable (such as Shunyata Alpha or Sigma NR V2 but that’s another story). My former setup required 3 different power cables and digital interconnects that costed a fortune. The Network portion was made by Lumin, the current generation is one of the best in the business. The Esoteric N-01XD is also an upscaler that works as good as my $4800 M Scaler. You can connect an external HD directly into the one of the two USB inputs and play directly. In the Esoteric App, I enable the volume control so I can use it as a preamp as well. Unless you throw in an obscene amount of money for a preamp, I find the sound to be more coherent and purer coming directly out of the DAC. By adding a preamp, the signal path is lengthened and perhaps another layer of coloration is introduced by the electronics, power cable and interconnect. My experience was the same using Bricasti M1SE, PS Audio Directstream DAC, Chord Hugo TT2, Chord DAVE etc. 

The Esoteric Unit also has a 10mhz clock input – this is crucial because you can connect a 10Mhz clock as upgrade path. I currently use a Cybershaft Flagship clock (also available for sale). This can improve the accuracy, transparency, focus and timing even further.
