Adcom GFA 5500

This power amp is in demand and for good reason. It is a powerhouse that is newer and better performing than the GFA 555 and GFA 555 ii. I've heard that this amp was at least partially designed by Nelson Pass.

There is a quirk and if you can work around it you get a superb amp at a great price. The on/off button is shot. It is inoperative and does not show a red light when the amp is on. If the amp is plugged in it's on, period. I'm going to try to fix it. If I'm successful the price goes way up. So act now! I have another GFA 5500 with no issues for $100 more. I was an Adcom retailer for 20 years and this is the only time I remember a GFA 5500 needing service. I must have sold 50 of these. Otherwise the condition is an "8".

Most Adcom preamps have a "courtesy" power plug in so the power button for the preamp could turn the power amp on as well. There are some people who claim that a power amp sounds better and lasts longer if it is always powered up. It is easy to install a lamp type clicker in the power cord and turn it on or off that way.

As always pick up is or meet up welome if you're reasonably near central Maryland. At these prices there is no reason to have paleolithic equipment. Many matching Adcom pieces are available. All of my Adcom components are treated with DeOxit for better performance and reliability.
