Review from Matthew Varey.

Rick Schultz Audio LanSlide

The Rick Schultz Audio LanSlide is a sound space maker.

Adding a Rick Schultz Audio LanSlide had a dramatic and immediate effect on my listening experience.  It changed the nature and qualities of what I am hearing, and did so to a significant degree.

The impact of the LanSlide far exceeds its price.  The LanSlide appears to have refashioned the combined effect of all of my components and treatment, as if I upgraded my amp and preamp and interconnects all at once.  I assume this is due to it impacting the signal outside the system, engaging with the signal before it hits these other elements, as opposed to an interconnect or single power cable that is within the system.  The LanSlide may have just proven that the LAN cable is more important to creating the sound of a system than any other component.  At the very least, it proves the ethernet cable is the most important cable to get right, with the largest single impact on the nature of the sound and sound quality.

The LanSlide is a CAT 8 LAN cable that includes a very highly designed pod within which resides the RSA technology.  The cable I have is a little over two meters in length.  I added the LanSlide into a series of filters already in place between my modem and my dac.  If someone without ethernet filtration were to add a LanSlide, I assume the degree of impact would be even more startling.

The first thing that struck me is bass presence and resolution.  It has amplified the low end of my system to become a much more immersive experience.  I was away from the listening room when Kiasmos’ Looped played and it sounded as if someone was trying to knock the house down.  I actually ran to the room the stereo is in to see if things were physically ok.  The bass is generally much more musical than ever before, which means there is more to engage with while listening.

Depending on the track, but consistently, my front wall now appears to be 10 – 12 feet further back, resulting in a sense of a much larger, and strangely, a more acoustically treated and therefore tonally accurate, listening space.  This is quite a trick in my small listening room, and results in many positive attributes, including more detail, and better instrument placement within the soundstage.  This increase in front to back space is worth many times the price of this cable.  It does provide a great deal of that sense of being there with live musicians.

Sounds emerge from space in a much more compelling and organic fashion.  Tiny specks of sound pin point themselves in space, then vanish instantly.  Cymbals and anything that resonates are present much longer, and more audibly, providing the chills and goosebumps of that physical, real, natural engagement.  Instruments have moved further away from each other than ever before, now appearing much more naturally and logically positioned in the enormous soundstage.

I also hear more influence from what sounds like the space in which each track was recorded.  Even if it is an engineering trick, I have a more clearly defined visual images of the physical characteristics of the recording spaces. This makes listening more visceral, more emotional, and a much more deeply felt experience.

I often picture the sounds of the system to be a metaphorical, visual net.  The LanSlide has been instrumental in strengthening and reinforcing the components of that net.  Each section has thickened, is more physically present, has more weight, and when I listen now I am more immersed within the structure of its total presence.

The last time I remember anything close to as large a leap in the advance of sound quality in one go was when I replaced all the hardware store duplexes in the line from the breaker box to the stereo with audio grade duplexes and added large amounts of Rick’s NPS contact enhancer to each connection point. That was not as complete a transformation as adding the LanSlide, but it was a time when the character of the sound quality shifted completely in a positive direction with no compromises.

Installed Shockwave upon arrival. I noticed a slight increase in realism, and a possible noise floor reduction. Six hours later, my foot was tapping like I have not experienced in a VERY long time. I was not expecting this diminutive device to do what I experienced... NOT on this level. Yes, your older Professional series of products were incredibly effective. They were also large, heavy, expensive beasts. How the shockwave manages to achieve what it does is baffling.

Concerning the effects of the Shockwave, I must agree with Mathew Varey of Toronto ON. Yes, the Shockwave does all of this! In spades... USA Audiogon member "rlawry" has hit the nail on the head with a strong "3" rating. Due to this powerful, profond effect, I was feeling a genuine emotional connection to the music/performers.

Rick, thank you for bringing this product to market. You are going to put a smile on many audiophile's faces.

Wow. Ok. Bass. Much more full and fully resolved bass. Three dimensional sound stage like I have never heard it before. Guitar strings humming. More and longer decay. Sweeter sounding. Soundstage larger and much more solid all the way out to the edges. Much more presence in the room. More experiential. Visceral. Much stronger connection to the music, the musicians. Everything sounds more real and more of the earth. Weighty. Believable. Much more separation. More space. More depth. Richer. More emotional.

Yeah the separation is astonishing. Difficult orchestral piece no longer mushed together. Instruments in their own places.

Wow. Trumpets. Cymbals. Everything is so much more a whole thing. Rings like metal.

And I tried the two in two very different systems with similar results. One is just on a Naim MuSo 2 that I have tricked out but even that little system did all those things. Everyone can benefit from this.

It is a more dramatic jump than most or all things I have tried so far. It is the most dramatic jump into the sort of experience I have been hoping for. The engagement and involvement and authenticity. Nothing that I remember has made a bigger difference to the system. Hard to say in that adding one new cable to a full loom of your cables isn’t the same as it is an increase of the qualities we love where in this case I am hearing new things, having a new experience, so it’s not just an improvement, it introduces an entirely different and better experience. Even the contact enhancer, which was a shocking improvement, really just accelerated what I had. This is like a new thing entirely. I am somewhere else with these in the systems. Hard to fathom how it could do so much.

It’s astounding. Unbelievable results for the money. Congratulations Rick.

OK, I had a chance to listen more extensively this morning and as expected, the sound had improved considerably as compared to no Shockwave or even to my initial listening session yesterday afternoon with the SW connected. In my assessment grading where 0=no change or a wash, 1=slight improvement, 2=significant improvement, 3=Holy Squatsauce, Batman, the change was a solid 3. Better than with power cables, power distributors, power conditioners, contact enhancer, or signal cables. This was somewhat unexpected but it was definitely there and goes to show that even digital signals still are carried as electronic signals that can be influenced by magnetic induction.

As usual with these devices, everything was bigger and more immediate, more spacious, bass was much more extended and sounded like bass heard in movie theaters, everything was more discrete and individual instrumental lines stood out more from the mix, even on mediocre recordings. The music was more dynamic but there was a warmth and ease to the sound so it was not merely a tonal balance change like that heard with inferior devices.

I sometimes wonder why the change is so much more profound when letting the system rest overnight as compared to the changes heard immediately after adding/changing the device. Does the settling/breaking in of the device itself cause the sonic changes? Is the quality of electricity better in the morning? Is my hearing more acute after a good night's sleep? Am I in a better mood in the morning? Not sure what combination affects the sound but it is definitely there.

Anyway, congratulations on the sonic improvement wrought by the SW. It even caught me by surprise.

Hi Rick, all this time the device was in system, with internet connected and working, most time with music streamed but not always. First days was usual roller coaster so I didn't pay much attention for 2 weeks. But now I did much critical listening and effect was unmistakable-great improvement. Big gain in clarity with big drop in parasitic signal. I can listen at higher volume and music just had real emotional impact. Congratulations and for money-real steal.

I’ve been doing business with Rick for many years, and he’s always created a beautifully sound audio piece and continues to impress me with everything he comes out with. The shockwave is just stunning, producing high definition out of CD quality music.

To use shockwave:
Simply unplug your Ethernet supply cable from your streamer, then reconnect your ethernet cable to the back ethernet female port of shockwave device.

Break in:  Shockwave instantly clarifies and ads dynamics and realism, unlike any other ethernet device. Works with any cable and any system often with measurable increases of speed on internet speed tests. Each unit is speed tested to increase internet speed on our internet test equipment.
