This performance has been much admired by critics since its arrival nearly 40 years ago. An English pianist and Viennese chamber ensemble make the most of Schubert’s melodies and rapid changes of harmonic color: The sound quality of the record is like having the musicians in for an evening of music in your home. The charming and popular setting of Schubert’s verses about the trout was, then, the starting point of the composition of the quintet, and nothing could have been more apt as the inspiration of a holiday-task than this sunny, unsophisticated tune.The whole work is pervaded with the summery care-free mood in which it was created.
