120 volt version! Description : The Musical Fidelity A100 is a strongly biased into Class A (roughly 93% of music is in Class A), the A100 benefits from the sonic advantages of Class A operation, without the drawbacks of immense heat and vast power consumption of pure Class A. Amazing amplifier Musical Fidelity A100. 50w in pure Class A! A british legend.  120 volt version.

Charles Thomson writes in his review:
"In appearance the A 100 appears to be identical to its smaller brother. That is until it is installed in ones hi-fi system. The extra 30mm in height and 32mm in width make it a much more substantial unit than the A1.

The A 100 is a simple yet elegant black box with only four controls on the front panel. An on/off switch with its associated red pilot light, a push button tape monitor, and two rotary controls – volume and input selector. The only other noticeable feature is the finely ribbed heat sink which covers the entire top surface of the amplifier.

Rear panel appearance is also neat and simple. Six pairs of gold plated phone sockets will accept a turntable, CD, tuner, aux, and tape recorder. A push button switch selects the required gain for either moving magnet or moving coil cartridges. Speaker connections are by way of 4mm banana sockets.

Because the A 100 operates in pure class-A it dissipates full power, as heat, all the time it is on. For this reason it is essential that the instructions regarding installation are followed to the letter. Not only does the entire top surface of the amplifier produce heat, but its two internal fans blow hot air from the right hand side of the amplifier. Turntables need to be kept well away from this area to avoid buckling LPs.

My first listening session was not a great success, although after a lengthy burn in period the sound altered considerably. The result was nothing short of amazing. A wide range of music was given an authority which I have seldom experienced before. Bass was tight and detailed; large organs, Bosendorfer pianos, kick drums and bass guitars posed no problem to this amplifier. Midrange was clear and musical, with human voice being rated as exceptional. Treble displayed a pure delicate quality with no trace of sibilance. All the qualities mentioned held true irrespective of the speakers used. These included KEF 104.2, Quad ESL63, Magneplanar SMG and Spender SP2. All inputs worked well, with the moving coil input being rated very highly.

Musical Fidelity’s A 100 is an exceptional performer, of that there can be no doubt. It was noted in the review of the A 1 that its 20 watt output seemed more like 50 watts. The A100 certainly sounds bigger than its rated 50 watt output would have you imagine.
