Daggo (google - it)

For the past six months I’ve had two very different systems in my home, and I’ve run the WyWire cables in both. The Zu Omen Def speakers combined with the Melody AN211 integrated amplifier system, created a big, brash, ridiculously liquid, American sound that won the heart of both my wife and I. It seemed that no matter what was playing, Tom Waits to Ratatat, this combination of equipment never lost our interest and left me constantly wanting more. More music, more volume, more fun and more bragging! The second system, Brodmann Festival Series speakers combined with the Mystere ia11 integrated amplifier system, created a sensual European finesse and a level of detail that tilted far too close to the realistic for the price of the speakers. A system that really shined with acoustic, blues, classical, opera recordings. I ran WyWires speaker and interconnect cables in both systems and I used the WyWires digital cable between the Electrocompaniet PC1 CD player and Audio Note DAC One Sig.

The speaker cables are as meticulously and well built as the interconnects and their shinning black cover looked great going from amplifier to speakers. The speaker cables also use the same technology as the interconnects, copper wire in cotton in a Litz geometry. They have what appears to be magnets at each end, but those bulges are purely for aesthetics.

When the WyWires speaker cables arrived I also had in the Supra Sword speaker cables and the Zu Mission speaker cables. The Supra Sword cables are about the same price as the WyWires, and the Zu Mission cables came in just under half the price.

Between the three cables, the WyWires and Supra offer a very exacting soundstage, both allowed more detail to make it from the amplifier to the speaker, and both cables offered very good articulation and dynamics. While the Zu Mission cables are fair step above speaker cables from Monoprice, when compared to the WyWires and Supra cables, they just didn’t seem to keep up.

Between the WyWires and Supra Sword cables there was less a difference in sonic attributes and more a difference in sonic character. The WyWires cables offered a more natural sound and three-dimensional imaging. The Supra Sword speaker cables had a more astringent, cleaner, and aggressive flavoring. Similar to the difference in a Belgian ale versus a California hopped IPA. While both are very good, and no matter how many Belgium ales I drink, a standard IPA will always be more of a comfort, more natural, beer. And that is how the WyWires sound to my ears. They just offer a whole hearted more natural sound that allows for all the frequencies to come through without over emphasizing or distorting.

The Neoteric Listener and WyWires' Silver Speaker Cables- by Dean Seislove

Bob Levi's excellent review of WyWires interconnects, Michael Wechsberg's fine phono cables write up, and Dave Clark's bestowal of a 2011 Brutus Award for the LITESPD USB cable illustrates the critical acceptance being accorded to WyWires' products. The effusive praise by audio stalwarts in various show reports further heralds the growing fame of this innovative new company. By now, you're probably aware that WyWires utilizes a precise consultation to help ensure that cables match the particular needs of the system and customer preferences. Ever impatient, though, I did exactly none of that and just asked them to ship out a pair of the Silver ones. Due to the backlog of review products and the patience of WyWires founder, Alex Sventitsky, I've been pleased to audition the Silver cables with a variety of products over a long trial period. The cables were alternately paired in the main system with Nola Contender speakers, various integrated amps (Ayon Orion II, Peachtree Audio iNova, and Arcam A-80), and a number of sources, including two CD players (Arcam CD82 and Block CD-100) and the CEntrance PX and Audioengine D2 DACs recently reviewed. I also used the Silver cables when reviewing the complete CEntrance Audiophile Desktop system, which proved especially instructive, as I'll discuss later.

Compared with the Nordost SuperFlatlines and the Kubala-Sosna Imagination speaker cables that I typically use, the WyWires Silver bests the Nordost in transient speed and dynamic extension and offers a more even tonal balance than the Imaginations. Of course, the WyWires cost more than the other two, so it should be expected to improve in performance. With cables, however, a higher price may give you a different sound, but not necessarily one that you'll like better or one that suits your purpose. We've all heard the admonition not to use cables as a tone control to alleviate the weaknesses of the system. Bollocks! Buy a product to please yourself, and nobody else. The frequent warnings against tinkering so much that you lose the best part of the original sound only applies to those who sell off items as soon as they buy new ones, so shape all you want and put it back if the sound degrades, I say. The more I consider the adjective "neutral" (or its close kin, "natural"), the more I question the value of either term as a descriptor, because it always begs the questions "Neutral according to whom and in which system?" The WyWires Silver cables deliver a "natural" sound, because to me, when compared with the other cables used in my system, there is no apparent boost across the frequency range, nor is there any attention-getting accentuation of resolution, soundstage, and timbre.

This is a huge advantage when listening to the Nola Contenders in my room because they don't need any help in the midrange department, especially when matched with the Ayon Orion II tube integrated amp. Inserting the WyWires in this configuration produces a wide open, detailed, and perfectly thrilling sound that can't be matched by the other cables on hand. Cables, like anything else in audio, are a mixed bag of preferences, typically voiced to achieve what the designer feels is best sonically, especially if it also happens to appeal to a large consumer base. Finding the "voice" of the Silver cables, however, proves a difficult task, as there doesn't seem to be any detectible characteristic other than everything sounds confidently clearer, deeper, and better. Like most products that eschew flash for substance, the effect is subtle but eminently perceptible. The Silver cables sound fast paced and lively, but they don't have that hyperactive super-speed that some people seem to desire.

Moreover, these cables won't deliver that instant punch up of voices and piano tones on their own accord, although it may seem so if your current cables mask those characteristics. The WyWires Silver cables open the windows of my system without rearranging the furniture, which works for me. The WyWires draws sweet music out of the Arcam integrated, and this is somewhat of a surprise, as that amp doesn't always show well with cables this revealing and responsive. This bodes well for those who might question whether or not $1200 is too much for a modest system. No matter which amp is used, however, the image and depth of instruments in the listening field seems more focused with the WyWires cables than with either the Nordost or Kubala-Sosnas. The only time I don't prefer the Silver cables is when they are inserted in the CEntrance Audiophile desktop system. There, the Kubala-Sosnas added a bit of midrange warmth and bottom end that, though maybe not exactly accurate, is what I prefer. All this is meant to underscore the value for potential customer to avail themselves of the opportunity to discuss listening preferences with WyWires prior to purchase

The WyWires Silver loudspeaker cables improve the sound of my system in all meaningful areas at a fair price. They offer excellent performance and solid build quality, and the ability to shape them to suit a customer's needs is an added bonus that makes them ridiculously easy to recommend.

WyWires Technology
At WyWires, we believe that a one size fits all approach to cable design does not serve the music or the music lover. WyWires is one of a small handful of companies that makes its cables in-house from scratch. Each of our products is designed for a very specific application. Our design approach has been to question and critically evaluate the tried and true methods of cable design. The result is something unique. Not only do WyWires exhibit excellent measured performance, but they sound great too.

Different source components - phono cartridges, CD players, tuners, phono stages and preamplifiers - output different signal strengths. A low output moving coil phono cartridge may have a nominal output of .2 millivolts or less, while a moving magnet cartridge may output 4 millivolts or more. A CD player’s maximum output is between 2 and 3 volts; up to 15,000 times greater than that of a typical MC cartridge. Our design philosophy dictates that a cable carrying a .2 millivolt output from an MC cartridge must be fundamentally different from a cable that connects your CD player to your preamplifier or for that matter, your preamplifier to your power amplifier.

How we make our cables…
The conductors that we use in our cables are made of many individually insulated strands of ultra high purity copper that are combined and braided according to a proprietary formula that considers voltage output as a primary variable. Our cables have the correct number of strands of a specific gauge for the signal and the return conductor depending on the application. The dielectric material we use is mostly air since the conductors are enveloped in organic cotton and in a larger Teflon tube. Our cables have very low characteristic impedance with very low inductance and capacitance. Minimizing inductance has been proven to be one of the keys in enabling a cable to present inner detail and superior soundstaging.

We believe that capacitance is much less of a problem in cable performance than previously thought. That being said, our cables have the lowest capacitance of any cable we have measured. Our Pre-Out cable has a capacitance of only 5.9 Pico Farads per foot, measured at 10kHz. Since we use small gauge conductors, the phenomenon known as “skin effect” is non-existent in our cables. Our cables have a minimalist look by design. We have demonstrated that adding insulation to obtain girth tends to degrade a cable’s performance. On average, each WyWires cable requires at least 4 person-hours to assemble and test.

Shielding is to be avoided…
In reality, radio frequency interference (RFI) and electromagnetic interference (EMI) are rarely problems in modern music and video systems. The downside of shielding against these imaginary gremlins is that energy is released into the conductive shield and then released back at a later time, smearing the signal. For this reason, our cables have no shield of any kind. The unique geometry of our cables virtually
eliminates any tendency for them to act as antennae or to pick up noise from other components. You will find that our cables are state of the art in their ability to present an eerily silent background between the notes on a recording.

What’s with all that weird metallurgy?
Some cable manufacturers differentiate themselves by claiming the unique sonic benefits of silver conductors, exotic alloys as well as long crystal copper conductors and other mysterious metallurgical potions. WyWires uses none of these in its designs and here are the reasons why:

• Pure silver is an excellent conductor of electricity but only slightly better than copper. In practice, silver should be alloyed with some other metal such as palladium, argentium, platinum or copper in order to enable silver wire to withstand physical stress. 99.999% pure silver is simply too soft and fragile for use in audio cables where the consumer expects performance to be stable for many years of handling and possibly several owners. Cables utilizing pure silver will not last long if you frequently move or upgrade your equipment. Our cables exhibit superior electrical properties to any silver cable and will last a lifetime.

• Exotic alloys and amalgams such as copper/aluminum, silver/gold, graphite and the like may be appropriate in some applications such as microwave transmission, transformer windings and dental implants. But again, these combinations do nothing but degrade the electrical performance of a cable at audio frequencies. These exotic materials appear compelling on the surface - we believe that the use of these materials may create a false sense of product differentiation. While some audiophiles may prefer the presentation of music through these materials, we believe that the results are not consistently demonstrable over a wide range of equipment types and listening tastes.

• Long crystal copper and silver sometimes called OCC (Ohno Continuous Cast) has become ubiquitous for high-end cables. The notion that electrons are slowed down or somehow corrupted by the crystal boundaries inherent in metal wire may or may not be true in theory. This idea may have some merit for solid core conductors carrying radio frequency or higher signals for long distances. At audio frequencies, small gauge conductors and relatively short distances, OCC wire adds nothing, in our view. We have experimented with this type of wire and we have found that it adds nothing to the enjoyment of music and even diminishes certain aspects of electrical performance. What we don’t know is - what happens to the long crystals over time. Do they maintain their original structure or do they revert back to their multi-crystal state after being bent, or twisted or reheated during the cable assembly process? Dr. Atsumi Ohno of the Chiba Institute in Japan patented the method in 1986.

Since then, only a small handful of companies have licensed the technology and manufacture all the OCC wire used in the high-end audio industry worldwide. If the practical merits of OCC wire could be demonstrated scientifically, it would have made its way to other applications where the markets are much larger.
