Acoustic Research AR3 Loudspeakers - Classics!

For your consideration, a stunning pair of AR-3 vintage loudspeakers in outstanding, professionally restored condition. The speakers consist of three drivers (tweeter, midrange, woofer) housed in original finish, dark walnut cabinets. Both cabinets retain the original "instruction" sheets on back (poor condition) and one retains the original "guarantee" sheet as well. All the drivers in both speakers work as they should, producing strong and clear sound. The tweeter and midrange adjustment controls accessible on the back of the cabinets work as well. Serial numbers are C69297 and C69988.

The professional restoration included the following:

1. Resealing of woofers, which show no sign of air leakage. Please note that AR3 speakers came with cloth-surround woofers, whereas the woofers in these speakers are AR3a replacements with foam surrounds. As far as my understanding, the performance difference between the two types of woofers was negligible.
2. Replacement of all four level controls with all-new controls purchased from Vintage-AR, one of the foremost authorities on Acoustic Research restoration.
3. Replacement of all crossover capacitors with brand new high quality Solen caps. In our experience, Solen caps do a magnificent job of opening up the sound of AR-3 speakers, extending highs and clarifying the bass—without compromising the fundamental vintage sonic warmth and character of these classics.
4. Replacement of all interior wire with Monster XP precision stranded high resolution speaker cable.
5. Replacement of grilles with masonite frames sourced from Vintage-AR. They are covered in clean cloth that is as close to the original as can be found.
6. New AR-3 laser-cut logos (one per speaker).

The result of the restoration was the equivalent of taking a blanket off these speakers. Clarity, soundstage, detail and control were all greatly enhanced, resulting in speakers that retain the classic, warm balance of the originals, while bringing them sonically up to date. We recommend a minimum of 25 watts per channel from a high quality amplifier to drive these speakers to reasonable levels.

We chose not to stain the cabinets, instead hand rubbing them with orange oil to restore their original color and sheen. There is minor damage along the edges of the cabinets, we have photographed the most visible sore spots, and encourage you to examine our pictures closely to ensure they satisfy your aesthetic standards.
