PAIR of REL-like Subs-EssexAudio SW-1's SW-1's Handsome Cherry

So, bet you
never heard of these even if you are an audio aficionado. So I apologize up
front for the somewhat wordy descriptions which follow.

Essex Audio
was the behind-the-scenes British designer/producer for many other firms. "Companies
such as REL and Rega, to name a couple, have tapped Essex for their design
prowess (per GC Audio, 2005)". They were producers of the REL subwoofers
up through about 2002 [per Tom Pierce of the now defunct(?) Essex Audio group].
Subsequently, they decided to directly market subwoofers of their own for
several years.

Not
surprisingly, the Essex Audio SW-1's  seem to be pretty much a clone of the REL's.
At least, a clone in the sense of their size, shape, and basic concepts (downfiring,
infinite baffle, use of Neutrik Speakon cable connections, additional low-level
inputs, etc.).

A
significant exception is their cabinetry, which is unusually handsome cherry if
you hope to feature them in a prominent setting. Size-wise, each is roughly a
12" cube (ala REL T-5's or REL R-218's, surprise surprise!).

I have
recently been striving to wind down one of my stereo setups and in the process
chose to compare several subwoofers I had on hand with each other via a 1/3 octave
Real Time Analyzer (RTA) iOS App (by Studio Six Digital). Guess what? The
frequency spectrums for one of my Essex Audio SW-1's and for my REL R-218 were
very, very similar. Based upon that experience, I would think that the helpful advice
expressed in the HiFi+ review about the REL R-218 would likely also apply to
the Essex Audio SW-1. To read this review, search for "absolute sound REL
R-218" which reveals the "rel.net/reviews-archive/" which then lists three favorable
"Serie R" review links. In my opinion, the Hi-Fi+ link review provides
unusually meaningful advice on the use of such 12" cube subwoofers.

So, why do I
have a pair of these? Well, back in 2010 I bought the 1st one from a dealer in
Philadelphia but never really used it for much of anything. Recently, I spotted
and bought a second one from an Audiogon dealer (TRM Audio) so I could experience
for myself what dual subwoofers are like. However, in my particular setting,
I can't honestly say that I formed any significant conclusions about the dual
setup. It is said that the dual subwoofer setup is good at helping to resolve
room-based bass anomalies. So if you are experiencing such issues, here's an inexpensive
chance to play with such a setup. Later, through the miracle of Audiogon, you
can always move on after you have played with them for awhile or keep them and simply
enjoy.

Some Specs: System type is Infinite Baffle with on-board amplification and active filtering. 10" Drive High Efficiency Unit(Extreme long stroke composite fiber driven by a 2" voice coil). Frequency Response: 23Hz - 120Hz, -6db at 23Hz. Amplifier: 120W RMS DC coupled bi-polar. Inputs: High Level 100K ohm unbalanced via Neutrik Speakon connector; Low Level 10K ohm unbalanced via gold plated RCA connectors.
