David Berning Co SET 300b Includes Western Electric 300b tubes

This ad is for a David Berning choke loaded, Class A, SET 300b amplifier, "Son of Siegfried". The sale includes the original Electro-Harmonix 300b output tubes, and a perfect pair of Western Electric 300b tubes. Original owner.

Over the past couple years David has been building small batches of interesting, (generally) low powered amplifiers that don't appear on his website. They include SET 300b, PP 300b, PP 6b4, SET 845, and a couple others. They all utilize his ZOTL technology just like the production amps. Because of the small runs, (3-6 amps) he's been building simple bent aluminum cases himself rather than buying custom cases to save money. You'll notice in the photos the utilitarian case work. I'm rating it as 6/10, even though it's in the same condition I received it. Minor scratching and rough edges.

This amp is the 4th (of 4) of this particular model run to date. I told Dave I call it "Son of Siegfried". Most people reading this ad know about Dave's previous 300b (or 211) model, The Siegfried. In the new amps, Dave incorporated the same technology in the driver stage that he uses in his statement production PP 845 amplifiers. He feels this has added another level of transparency beyond even The Siegfried. This is not your father's 300b. It is fully extended from the deepest bass, to clear smooth highs, as well as perfect midrange.

The sale includes a pair of Western Electric 300b tubes. I purchased these through Andy at Vintage Tube Services. They were fully tested and curve traced to NOS level. Dave also curve traced them after I received them. They have a couple hundred hours on them at most. As when I purchased them, there are no warranties expressed or implied with the tubes. Amp and tubes insured shipped, but local pick up preferred.

Because the amp uses RF to light the filaments, this amp is dead quiet even on my 102db efficient speakers. NO HUM! However, not all brands of 300b tubes will light. No problem with the Electro-Harmonix or Westerns, but Dave tells me some Chinese tubes he's tried won't light with RF. I've only tried the 2 brands mentioned but want to be clear there may be some brands of tubes that may not light with the RF heating. The other tubes included are NOS 6sn7 RCA in the gain stage, and NOS 6au6 Telefunken in the driver stage. 12au7 in the input stage.

I don't want to sell the Western tubes separately. This is a wonderful SET amplifier, and the new owner should have a pair of Westerns to enjoy with it. Excellent opportunity to get an almost new Berning amplifier at a fraction of the cost of the production amps.
