Extremely rare to find this particular Uesugi pre-amp available for sale in the U.S. Then again, its extremely unusual to find any Uesugi product available for sale in the U.S. I happen to purchase this pre-amp when I was living in Japan, in 2012. My understanding is that this
particular amp – the UTY-12 - was originally introduced into the market in 1994, and that only 200 units were made. This Amp was later completely serviced at the end of 2011, shortly before I purchased it.
I unfortunately don’t know the specs as I purchased it in Japan from people who spoke no English, and my Japanese was limited. However, I came across a page for it on the audio-heritage website (an excellent resource for those of you interested in Japanese vintage high-end audio components), and it has the specs in Japanese, which can be translated to English. See http://audio-heritage.jp/UESUGI/amp/uty-12.html. I translated this page using Google translate and attached a screen capture of the specs as one of the pictures to this listing. Aside from this, all I can
really tell you about this amp is that in combination with the custom John Hillig power amp I have (also listed on Agon), it sounds really, really good (my apologies – I’m not the most sophisticated when it comes to audiophile verbiage).
I’m listing the condition as a 7 because of age, but amp is in wonderful cosmetic condition and works beautifully for everything I need it for (standard 2-channel system plugged into power amp, and connected to CD player and turntable via unbalanced inputs). And as you can see from the internal wiring of this product, the maker was incredibly meticulous, bordering on the extreme,
and I believe that effort really comes through in the music.
Selling this item for $2200. This item new in
1994 would have been 330,000 yen in Japan ($3300 in 1994 based on historical exchange rates), so adjusted for inflation, that would be around $5400 in today’s money. And if you google "uesugi" and find newer models available for sale now, you'll see that a comparable amp (new) sells for between $5000 and $9000. And so I believe pricing is fair.
Though this is a wonderful amp that I wish I could keep, I don’t use it as much as I would like, and am likely
going to be relocating soon to a place where I may not be able to enjoy it at all. Paypal and credit card users add 3%.
Finally, please note that this item was made in Japan for the Japanese market, and thus is designed for Japanese voltages (i.e., 100v.). Thus you might want to consider using a transformer, though it probably isn't necessary if you don't have one.
