MICRO SEIKI DD-8 TURNTABLE - NICELY RESTORED
For auction is a 100 volt Micro Seiki DD-8 2 speed, direct drive turntable.
This is a very nice restoration of a great performing turntable. The DD-8 was not exported to North America according to my reference books. However Micro Seiki sold the DQ-50 in North America as a 110-120 volt machine and the DQ-50 is essentially the same turntable as the DD-8 except for the 100 volt-only components. The assembly consists of a two speed motor unit and a beefed up MA-505 tonearm wired directly through the plinth. This allows the user to select their own high-quality output cables from the table to the phono stage or preamp.
This particular unit came to us with a spindle that had a slight bend in it; probably from someone accidentally dropping the platter on it at some time in it's past (usually how it happens). The dustcover was also quite yellowed which is not unusual for covers from that era as they were made mostly from styrene plastic, which gets very brittle over time and yellows horribly without constant cleaning and polishing. Replacing the spindle took a bit since we did not have the exact one in our spares stock, but was finally sourced. That corrected the platter wobble. A new acrylic dustcover was ordered and it looks beautiful. The tonearm was in excellent mechanical and cosmetic condition but was given a coat of Flitz anyway and now looks like new. We also found some original Micro Seiki output cables and they will be included.
The DD-8 comes with a 3 lb, 13.8 inch platter and a thick D1 rubber mat. It's sound absorption properties are excellent.
The large over-sized height-adjustable mounting insulators have been repainted and look like new and the plinth condition is almost flawless. It is hard to find even a tiny blemish. The original wood finish was rubbed down with our favorite high quality wood oil and it looks like new. Please refer to the photos to make your own evaluation.
This is a 100 volt unit and because of age I recommend using a step down transformer and I will include one with the sale. I have several 100 volt machines and find that the transformers have the added benefit of cleaning up the local voltage a little.
This is a 25+ year old piece of electronics. I have described it as accurately as I can. I am an analog audio enthusiast like most of you and I don't like buying "surprises" either. However, because of the age of this machine no warranty is given or implied and other than the information in this description, is being sold "as is". You may email me with questions about the condition but please don't ask for serial numbers. With all of the online scams today, only the new owner will get the serial numbers.
