Heathkit EA-3's, well kind of Ugly Custom Monoblocks-BlackGates!

First, I love the sound of EL84 tubes.  In my opinion, dynamic yet forgiving and not too lush and soupy.  Not perfect, but has become my tube of choice to handle my musical collection and tastes.
Here's the short and sweet of it.
I had a very nice condition Heathkit EA-3 that I found at an estate sale.  For those of you who don't know, an EA-3 is an EL84 tube integrated mono amplifier.  At the time, I was experimenting with mono sound and was having a great time with it, but I found out I'm really a two channel stereo kind of guy.
But, I enjoyed the sound so much, I thought wouldn't it be cool to remove the preamp portion, and simply make it a one-off mono block.  I found another one, and sent them both to the shop to have them violated, dismantled, and at the same time........upgraded.  I had the old captive power cords upgraded to new and better captive power cords.  New speaker binding posts and IC connections, along with a rear power switches.(see pics)
 From the Shop:   
1.  The EL-84's were fine  2.  Replaced the 6AN8 Tubes   3.  Replaced the power supply caps with dual BlackGate power caps   4.  Replaced all four output caps with Rel Theta Caps 5.  Replace output resistors   6.  Clean all controls and pots   
The experiment was a success.  Great sounding EL84 mono block amplifiers.  The experiment left them less than desirable looking with a face that only a Mother could love.  Nonetheless, I was very pleased with the industrial punk look, and ran them without their covers when in my system.  I thought of making a nice wood face, or maybe granite.  Whatever your taste, finish them in the style you like.  They have large orange glowing "power on" lights on the front now.
All in all, you would be hard pressed to find better tube sound for less money, packaged in such unique clothing as these guys.  Go ahead.  Experiment with your visionary side.  Season to taste and put some fun back into the hobby.  Buyer to pay for insured shipping and PayPal fees if that is the method used.  I rated these a 5 for cosmetics only.  Thank you for looking and please check out my many other audio listings.
